Are Garden Rooms Warm Enough To Use In Winter?

A question we are often asked by our customers is “Are garden rooms warm enough to use in winter?”

And the answer is yes!

Garden rooms are detached buildings from the main house and are built using predominantly natural materials on the outside. At first glance, it makes sense why so many people might think that these buildings could be cold, drafty, damp or hard to keep warm in winter – but this is far from the case.

As comfortable as a room in your house…

At Green Retreats we have meticulously engineered our buildings to be as comfortable as a room inside your home would be. An insulated garden room is still an extension to your house, just simply detached. Our carefully chosen premium-quality building materials are akin to those found in modern home-building, creating a warm, dry and comfortable atmosphere inside our garden rooms. Just as you do at home, when the colder winter months come around simply switch on your garden room heating and your building will perfectly comfortable to use.

HOW DO GARDEN ROOMS STAY WARM?

We’ve got you covered.

As garden rooms are an external form of home improvement which is not attached to the rest of your home, we often have customers who are concerned about how they’re going to efficiently heat their extra garden space in winter.

Here’s how we help:

Premium insulated throughout as standard

The walls, roofs and floors of our garden buildings use complex insulation layers to create a comfortable internal atmosphere. We are constantly pioneering to ensure that our insulation is the best it can be – testing and adopting the latest in new materials and techniques. The roofs and floors of our garden rooms use thick foam insulation between composite plates to create a strong barrier against the elements. Our floors are also raised from the ground using our concrete mini-pile foundations to eliminate the risk of any rising damp. Our walls have been cleverly engineered using a blend of natural and man-made materials to offer superior thermal quality, breathability and fire-proofing. What’s more, all of our doors and windows also use industry-leading Pilkington K double-glazing for optimal thermal efficiency as standard.

A fun fact about our insulation!

We use a reflective breathable membrane which allows only directional transfer of moisture out of our garden buildings – creating a dry and healthy space inside. This reflective layer also keeps heat inside the building during winter and reflects heat away during summer. Very smart!

Heating included as standard

Every building from Green Retreats comes with an oil-filled free-standing radiator already included in the price, helping to remove the chilly edge of winter. Internal heating paired with our excellent cavity insulation means you won’t need to be spending a fortune in keeping your building warm – it is quick and easy to heat up your garden room.

Optional upgrades are available for complete temperature control

If you’re looking for an added boost of warmth and want to add a touch of luxury to your building, we also offer optional upgrades such as wall-mounted radiators or underfloor heating for added comfort underfoot! For complete temperature control, we also offer air-conditioning units – taking care of those are hot summer days whilst tackling the winter chill.

Some things to consider…

1. Size matters

When thinking about how you’re going to heat your garden room it is important to keep in mind the size of the space you would to heat. Our buildings are available in over 70 size configurations with the largest size being 30 square metres internally. A large building will take more time and energy to heat compared to a small garden room. With that in mind, no matter what size of garden room you choose our teams will be sure to give you the correct advice about heating to ensure you are prepared for the cold.

2. Insulation is important in summer too…

Our garden buildings are designed for use all-year-round. Whilst our insulation helps keep you warm in winter, it also helps keep you cool in summer. As you would inside your home – if we are blessed with some scorching summer days you might need to consider adding a fan or free-standing air-conditioning unit to your garden room to keep you comfortable. Alternatively, speak to us during your building design stage about adding built-in air-conditioning as part of your installation with us.
