'Are Gravel Grids worth it?' A blog by IBRAN 1 Jul 2021

Some of IBRAN's most frequently asked questions include 'Are gravel grids worth it?' 'What are the pro's and con's of using gravel grids to replace your driveway surface?' 'Is it really worth it buying them?' Gravel grids are inexpensive and will save you money in the long term IBRADRIVE gravel grids aren't cheap, flimsy bits of plastic that fall apart the minute a car tyre even glances at them, these grids are solid, reinforced mesh structures designed to take an absurd amount of weight whilst holding gravel in place. While strength is a massive bonus, these grids are designed to help reduce the amount of gravel you need to cover an area to just 60-70kg/sqm. In the longer term you'll find these grids reduce the amount of gravel lost to the road, to your footpath and to your tyre treads! Compared to other surfaces, the overall cost of laying a grid-bound gravel driveway is quite affordable. With your sub base or existing but degrading solid surface in place, a bulk bag of gravel (without shopping around too much) from Jewson's will set you back only around £60 for 800kg. This 800kg will cover 10-11sqm, bringing the cost to around £5.45-£6 a sqm!

You can drive over them in winter or with a motorbike

In the 15 years IBRAN have tweaked the design and added new features having thanks to your feedback. Less advanced designs were notoriously bad for being slippery in the snow and for motorbikes. The simple solution to that - add anti slip nodules on the top surface. This means you can use your gravel driveway the whole year through, without ever getting your wheels stuck or spinning, no matter whether it's snowed! The year through, gravel driveways that have been reinforced with grids are stronger, more resilient and easier to drive over than any gravel driveway. Gravel grids are definitely worth the investment for a strong, durable driveway surface that costs less and lasts longer!

What should I lay down before gravel?

Experts from Gardenista suggest adding a based layer of crushed rock on top of the dirt. This should be about 2 inches deep, then top that with 3 inches of the pea gravel. That added base will keep the smaller pea gravel more stable.

To ease maintenance, using gravel instead of grass can be a good alternative, according to the team at Family Handyman . A gravel yard will last a long time and requires little work to maintain. It does not decompose, and it will not attract bugs and other pests. Gravel can also be better for the environment because it protects the earth’s natural resources – no watering or fertilizer required. Even if you don’t prefer the look of complete gravel landscaping, you can opt to use gravel as part of your landscaping instead. Gravel is an ideal material to use as a transition from the house to the garden. It looks beautiful in patios, garden borders, paths and driveways and creates a softer look than paving. It is also versatile enough to complement different architectural styles, from old to contemporary to modern. Many homeowners whose front and side yards are covered in grass can benefit from having all-gravel backyards. Aside from being low-maintenance, these can be beneficial for other reasons. Someone who does not have a garage or carport can fill in their backyard with gravel, create a driveway and keep their car parked safely. Building a fence will also provide added security for the yard.
