If you have an existing drywall ceiling or you will be hanging one, you can’t run the wire beneath the joists. The bottom of the joists must be level and free from obstructions. That leaves three alternatives: notching the bottom of the joists in an unfinished ceiling to create indentations to hold the wire, drilling holes through the centers of the joists to run the wire or running the wire above the joists in an attic area. Consult an engineer before notching or drilling through the joists. While it’s usually permissible, if the joists are substandard, it could weaken them further.
