It can be hard to know what product is best for the job you have to carry out. Just a few months ago, we published a blog on the difference in cement, mortar and concrete – a trio that can often be mixed up. You can find that blog post here. Today, however, we are going to be looking at another product entirely. We are going to be looking at Post Mix: what it is, how it can benefit your project, and how exactly is it used.

Post Mix

Post Mix is a very useful and versatile readymade concrete mix which is ideal for many jobs, whether it is DIY or larger scale. It is often used for setting fence posts, gate posts, or even as a base for paving. It is very fast setting, which is fantastic for getting the job done quickly, however, it also means that you need to ensure you know what you are doing so the job is done right and plan your project accurately before starting. Made from a mixture of cement and ballast, Post Mix is typically used for setting posts as it is quick to mix and pour in place and it allows the posts to set quickly with very little waiting time. It also hardens to an extremely secure and solid concrete. The great thing about Post Mix is that it already comes pre-mixed and ready for you to use. You can purchase Post Mix from your local Haldane Fisher store in a variety of bag sizes, depending on the size of your project. Instructions are clearly printed on each of our bags, however, Post Mix is extremely easy to use: all that is required is water. Post Mix is never to be mixed using a machine, but rather to be mixed at site. For example, when you are setting posts, once you have dug a deep enough hole and placed the post inside it and ensured with a spirit level that it is completely straight, you must pour water around the post. Then, once water is completely surrounding the post, it is time to add the Post Mix powder and gently stir until there is no more water but only a concrete mixture. This can then be left and will be set within 15 minutes.

When using Post Mix for placing fence posts, it is important the posts are placed deep enough in the ground. The same goes for gate posts as well, to ensure they stay secure despite any movement that may be caused by them being hit, gates opening or closing, and also adverse weather conditions. When your posts are securely in the ground, Post Mix is to be poured around the post to secure it in place. Always pour the mix around the post, and never underneath it. By pouring Post Mix underneath the post, you risk decay of the wood as the concrete mix can retain water and soak the post. Please also make sure to use a spirit level when doing any DIY job as it is easy for the eye to affix things slightly crooked.
