Shed door replacement

Below are steps to installing a replacement shed door.

What you will need:

Step one: Measure the existing door frame

Using the tape measure, takes measurements of the existing door frame. This should be done even if you know the size of the previous door, as the frame may have swollen or warped slightly. Take 3 width measurements inside the frame, one each at the top, middle and bottom. Use the widest width. Take measurements of down both internal sides of the frame and use the highest height.

Step two: Purchase a shed door, hinges and lock

Purchase a shed door based on the accurate measurements you take. If you can’t find the exact size then go up a size as shed doors can be trimmed or sanded down for the best fit. Pay attention to manufacturer’s instructions regarding hinges, as you’ll need either 2 or 3 and this can depend on the heaviness of the door. If the manufacturer recommends 3 then use 3. Once you’ve got your hinges choose which lock you want. If security doesn’t matter then a simple bolt and chain could work for you. Add a padlock for enhanced security.

Step three: Fix your hinges

Line up your new hinges where the holes of the old door hinges were for total ease of fitting. Use a pencil to mark out where they should go on the shed door and screw these in for easier door hanging. Screws should be provided with the door you purchased.

Step four: Hang the door

You’ll more than likely need someone to help you out with this as the heavy shed door must be lifted and placed on the hinges. Screw everything into place and open and close the shed door to get a feel if anything is sticking or jamming.

Step five: Finish the door with wood stain

Optionally, you can use wood stain to change the colour of the door to be darker, to treat the door for a longer life, and to give it a glossy finish.
