Can you run armoured cable along a fence UK?

At the end of the day it's about providing protection from a spade or digger if it's underground. You can run the cable as it is and just clip it to the fence. The armourings inside will provide mechanical protection. There is no set height for this, so if you want to hide it at the back of your beds, that'll be fine.

View Full Version : Legality for electrics

JimHull Hi all,

This subject will no doubt have been covered before but I'm new here and the sheer number of posts is overwhelming  I need to run about 15m of 2.5mm armoured cable from the house to a new shed which is going to house a small consumer unit for a new pump house build.

Do I really need to bury the cable in a trench 2' deep and run warning tape over it before burying or is there a simplier way of doing it that will still meet all the legal requirements?

The feed will be RCD protected. I'm going to do all the cable runs myself and get an electrician to do the final wiring. Seems a lot of fuss for a domestic shed, I only want to run a 55w UV, pump, air pump and a couple of lights and sockets in the shed. If thats the only way to do then I'm thinking of going overground using galvanised conduit

Any suggestions or ideas would be most welcome

Thanks

Jim :o

miles41 Hi Jim,

You don't have to bury armoured cable at all, but if you do, then yes, it does need to be at the correct depth and appropriately marked, as you describe. The easier method would be to have it above ground. Do you have a fence that you could cleat it at low level? This is how I have done mine At the end of the day it's about providing protection from a spade or digger if it's underground. JimHull Thanks Miles, can I run the cable along the fence unprotected ie just with cable clips or does it have to be in conduit?. Also does it have to be a certain height above ground level?. The reason I ask is that I don't have any fence battens and would ideally like to hide the cable behind some rendered raised beds

JimHull A lot less hassle than digging the garden up. Thanks mate

Doghouse Riley The regulations tightened up after 1/1/2005, I seem to recall.

Not before time as I know a few people who I wouldn't trust to fit a three-pin plug to a kettle. So there's a lot of things I did before then which might not be possible now, although I consider there is no risk. I've an armoured cable from the house to the garage. It's under the 6" concrete raft that supports our York Stone patio. I installed it long before I knew what I was going to do with it. So it's pretty safe. I use it to control the lights or whatever in the garden. "One live three common" So I can have it to control three different functions, from "stuff" plugged into a socket board in the garage, from switches behind the curtains next to our French windows. JimHull Been out there today and weighed it up, the fence idea is a no go as it looks unsightly going round the concrete posts. I'm just going to dig a trench and do it properly, a bit more work but once it's in it's never coming out

miles41 Ah ok, didn't realise you had concrete posts. As you say, once it's in the trench, it'll be done for good. vince why not go for 4mm so if you ever want to heat the pond it will cope no problem. as you say do it once do it right mate JimHull Could do mate, I've decided to run a water pipe aswell so everything is down the bottom end. Need to sort a system out for dumping waste aswell from the static chamber. Just wish this weather would behave so I can crack on with it

longboardpete The bottom of the trench should be blinded with sand, cable layed in and blinded again with sand, fill the trench but put the caution tape about 6" under the surface so if anyone digs down they come across the tape well before the cable

JimHull Thanks Pete, it 2 feet the legal requirement?

We might have got away with an indemnity insurance policy if we didn't have that. Solicitors want to know the ins and out of everything now regarding any "home improvements", they even asked us for the manufacturers literature for the "celotex" we put on an external wall. "Celotex" being a generic term like "Hoover" I couldn't provide it....luckily they were ok with that but in my new place I will be keeping a close eye on things like this.

longboardpete 2ft is ample. All electrical works on a new circuit or an extension of an existing circuit will need to be certified by a suitably qualified electrician.
