Read More »Live and dead loads can drastically alter the maximum span for a 2×4 component. Load is the amount of weight and materials that a structural component can support safely without compromising the integrity of the lumber. Dead load is a permanent load and will be smaller than live load (usually 10 or 20 pounds per square foot (psf). Live load is the temporary load and includes people, pets, furniture, and even weather like snow and rain. Live load carries a higher value than dead load and is often ranked at 30 or 40 pounds per square foot. In addition to dead load and live load, you need to consider the duration of load, which is the time that a load can properly support. You can multiply full-time loading to determine load. For example, for a 7-day load duration, you will multiply the full-time load by 1.25. So, for simplicity, if you take a 2×4 with a full-time load of 2000 Fb (bending design strength in pounds per square inch), you can multiply that by 1.5 to get a 7-day load of 3000 Fb.
