Do floating shelves sag?

The one reason these types of shelves fail is because the hardware doesn't hold up overtime. Once it starts to sag, things literally go sideways, sliding off your shelf. Or at worst, your shelf could fall right off. The hardware can also limit what you can place on the shelf when you've got little weight support.

We’re seeing floating shelves everywhere lately. They offer a clean and stylish way to display your items on your wall. They’re modern, minimal, and a great option for bathrooms, offices and even kitchens. The downside? Without the right support, they sag, droop, and can be a safety hazard. The struggle is real when it comes to floating shelves. How do you make that heavy, solid wood shelf float seamlessly on the wall? Easy with brick or concrete walls, but not so easy when dealing with thin drywall walls. The one reason these types of shelves fail is because the hardware doesn’t hold up overtime. Once it starts to sag, things literally go sideways, sliding off your shelf. Or at worst, your shelf could fall right off. The hardware can also limit what you can place on the shelf when you’ve got little weight support.

But floating shelves don’t have to be a nightmare.

That’s why we’ve partnered with HOVR to bring you the Stratus shelf with the HOVR bracket. We offer delivery and install for $175, for any number of shelves or it can still be done DIY!

Meet The Stratus Shelf

Our Stratus shelf is the perfect way to organize and display your items. It’s sleek and seamlessly fits into your space. We make each shelf by hand right here in the heart of Toronto with Ontario sourced solid woods. Find the look you love with options to choose from like our beautiful ambrosia maple, rough-sawn maple (for that rustic appeal) or black walnut. We can build them in live edge, too! Looking for something different, but not a DIY person? No problem – we can work with you to design the perfect shelving for your home. And you can be sure you won’t have to worry about them sagging – because when you buy a Stratus shelf, you’re also getting the HOVR hardware.

HOVR Hardware

Designed to tackle the hassles that come with floating shelves, HOVR is a simple solution to traditional floating shelf hardware. When installed properly, this hardware can actually hold up to 300lbs! Forget sagging shelves! This is a game changer. With the HOVR system, the hardware works like a french cleat with two pieces that snap into place. One piece is on the wall, and the other gets recessed into the back of the shelf. The hardware is invisible once recessed into the back of the shelf. So what does “installed properly” mean then? Well, it means drilled into at least two wood studs. However, you can install the hardwood on one stud, dry wall, aluminum studs or concrete walls. When picking the length of your hardware, you don’t always need the hardware to be as long as the shelf. For example, 3ft of hardware is adequate for a 5ft shelf. This easy to install solution will keep your shelves secure and sturdy over time!

Why do mechanics use brass hammers?

The brass head is used primarily in the automotive world and is handy for its anti-spark properties and overall softness. It's excellent for driving in fragile bearing races or hammering around the fuel system. A good rubber mallet is key to have in your toolbox for working on cars or even jobs around the house.

If you've ever found yourself staring at a stuck part on your car, it might be time to upgrade your hammer collection. After all, hammers are some of the most useful tools a mechanic can have in their toolbox. All hammers are not the same, however, and are used for different things—so make sure you're using the correct one. For this list, we used our experience in the field (aka our garages) to determine which hammers are truly essential. Whether you wrench professionally or just on weekends, you'll want to make sure a drawer in your toolbox is set aside for these agents of brute force. So add some shiny new specimens to your hammer collection and show that rust bucket who's boss!
