Storage boxes can be used for the storing of a wide array of different items, and storing clothing and other important items in plastic storage containers is a good way to prevent them from being exposed to mildew and moisture. If any moisture gets into a plastic storage container prior to sealing it closed, however, then mildew can grow and thrive without you being any the wiser. In this article we will outline a few simple steps that will help prevent mildew from growing in your plastic storage boxes.

1. Clean and dry items before storing.

It is extremely important to make sure that your items are clean and dry before storing them away. Any dirt left on your belongings can easily cause scratches if left on for too long. Clothing and upholstery that get put in storage while damp can attract mould and moisture, and metals and woodwork can rust or rot. Properly cleaning and drying all of your items before storing them will prevent this from happening.

2. Pack desiccators in your containers.

Desiccators are a type of product, such as silica gel packets, that help you to deal with any residual moisture in your storage boxes. Chuck a few of these packets into your storage containers to simply absorb any moisture that might find its way in; but be sure to check the expiration date and replace them as needed, as desiccators may expire over time.

3. Consider airflow

Airflow is one of the key components to creating a mould and moisture-free environment in your storage box. Airflow is not only important for some items being placed in containers, but also for the storage unit as a whole; for this reason, you should avoid pushing storage boxes directly up against walls. Also, avoid placing them directly on top of concrete floors; concrete is a porous material, which means that moisture from the ground can sometimes seep out from underneath it.

4. Try a climate-controlled unit

Climate-controlled units aren’t a necessity, but if you’re someone who likes to triple up on their moisture protection, you might be interested in this as an option. Climate-controlled storage units ensure that you’re always going to have a properly ventilated space, that completely prevents moisture levels rising and causing mould to grow. That concludes this short blog article on how you can easily and effectively keep moisture out of your storage boxes. If you were looking to purchase some storage boxes for your office, home or workplace, then you might be interested in our full range of Office Storage products, or our range of Storage Boxes here, which includes things like storage trunks with wheels, euro containers and plastic tubs.
