Do composite doors fade in sunlight?

A beautiful stylish front door really can give your home that wow factor, making it stand out in the neighbourhood. Therefore, the last thing you want is a tired-looking and faded front door that’s only a few years old! Strong sunlight can cause some uPVC doors to fade, and timber doors can need re-painting every few years. However, when it comes to issues with front doors, problems with composite doors are few and far between, therefore proud owners of composite doors do not have to worry. You may very well be wondering what is a composite door made of? Well, composite doors are made with an outer skin of Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP). This tough skin makes them exceptionally durable against the elements, both heat and cold. Whatever the weather, you can have total peace of mind that composite door fading will not occur. In fact, it will look as good as new for many carefree years to come.

Will a composite door warp?

Prolonged exposure to excessive amounts of heat or water, can make some timber or uPVC doors expand and shrink. This can cause them to warp, making it harder to open and close them efficiently. However, composite doors with their reinforced plastic skin, and robust core, stay watertight despite our often inclement weather! This means that there is no danger of your new composite door warping at any time of year.

How long do composite doors last?

Again, due to their robust construction, composite doors have a longer lifespan than most uPVC doors. Indeed, a quality composite door should have a lifespan of between 20 to 30 years. This makes them a cost-efficient choice for any Hampshire, West Sussex & South East property. Also, their longer lifespan means they will leave less of a carbon footprint on the environment.

How to clean a composite door?

We’ve briefly touched on how low-maintenance composite doors are, but this simple composite door cleaning checklist is all the proof you need! Using warm soapy water, each month wipe over the panel and the frame using a soft sponge and dry the surface with a soft cloth Do the same with any glazed sections and finish off with a mainstream glass cleaner Use a household stainless steel cleaning product for stainless steel hardware on a monthly basis Wipe over non-stainless steel handles with a mild soap solution and polish every 6 months Lubricate hardware and hinges with a light engineering oil every 6 months Take care of the locking mechanisms with a Teflon-based lubricant every 12 months Remove stubborn stains with a specialist uPVC cleaner. (always read the label before use) NEVER use abrasive cloths or cleaners on your composite door and avoid using graphite powder or oil on the locking mechanism, as they’re likely to irreversibly damage it.

First of all, are you completely sure that it is a composite door? Other than the many differences we’ve outlined above, the most noticeable difference between composite and uPVC doors is their thickness – composite door panels are usually much chunkier than uPVC panels. If it is a composite door, chances are it has long passed its best and is in urgent need of replacement. If your budget won’t stretch that far, and you’re not eligible for home improvement finance, you may be able to breathe new life into an aged faded composite door with a specialist multi-surface plastic restorer. That said, if your composite is that old, it’s definitely worth looking into a modern high-performance upgrade to keep your household safe, warm and dry for decades to come.
