A solid foundation will help protect your building from variable ground conditions and ensure fittings such as windows and doors remain square and secure. A faulty and unsuitable foundation will put excessive pressure on the log cabin leading to a shorter life span. A common question asked by the customer, we recommend using a solid, purpose-built concrete foundations or metal pile driven supports (ground screws). If your new building is replacing an old garage, the old foundations can sometimes be adequate if the concrete hasn’t degraded and is thick enough. Popular Foundation Types for Garden Buildings

Concrete

A concrete base is the most durable and solid foundation choice, but also the most expensive. It can become very costly if your planned site has terrible access. Permanent in its nature, it is important to get the foundation right to avoid costly removal and reworking. If a concrete foundation is the only workable solution, we recommend using a local builder to complete the work as the concrete base will need to be completely level.

Ground Screws

Ground screws are an innovative alternative to concrete foundations. The costs are much lower than concrete and take a fraction of the time to install. When you weigh up the choice between a ground screw and a concrete base, the time you save is a huge plus, in addition to the weight itself – lifting and lugging cement bags or concrete blocks is no longer an issue. In terms of the working day, the ground screw is a very cost-effective solution.

Timber Frame

A timber frame foundation will typically sit freely on stone or other solid footings, lifting the garden log cabin and allowing air to circulate beneath it. Unlike with concrete, adjustments can be made with relative ease – where the setting is on uneven ground, structural tweaks can resolve slight subsidence or overcome any site slopes or cambers. A big advantage of a timber frame foundation is that it is extremely easy to lay with minimal machinery or plant equipment needed. Furthermore, timber is renewable in nature and has a far-reduced impact on the environment.
