Does a porch need foundations? Can you build a porch without foundations?

Typically consisting of low-level brick dwarf walls, columns, windows and a door, no matter the size, all porches require foundations to comply with building regulations.

Why do porches need foundations?

Foundations form a steadfast platform that prevents walls and floors from separating. As well as supporting the structure, solid porch foundations create an effective barrier that serves to protect against damaging moisture and groundwater penetration. The concrete used also provides additional insulation to keep homes warmer for longer.

How deep should foundations be for a porch?

Although foundations for porches (or footings) depend on the size and weight of the structure, as well as specific ground conditions, porch foundation depths in the UK that fall within permitted development are typically built on foundations of 600mm wide x 450mm deep. Once we have discussed your specific requirements and taken measurements of your home, we will be able to advise further.

Porch foundation options

As well as a poured concrete block to form the porch footing, compliant foundation material options for porches built in the UK must include:

A damp proof membrane

Plastic sheeting

Polystyrene boards for insulation.*
