Do coloured UPVC windows fade? Coloured UPVC windows do fade but to what extent depends on how they were manufactured. If you have coloured UPVC windows and you are worried about this, you can have them spray painted to protect the finish underneath.

Manufacturing method

Older coloured UPVC windows (those that were manufactured more than ten years ago) were most usually manufactured in white UPVC with a few millimetres of coloured plastic bonded to the surface. It is these windows which fade fast because the top layer of plastic is susceptible to elongation when exposed to UV. Newer coloured UPVC windows are usually manufactured solid, which is to say the colour permeates through the UPVC. This solid colour makes the windows highly resistant to fading. However, because they are coloured, noticeable fading will still occur over a period of fifteen to thirty years no matter their durability.

A solution to colour fading

If you are worried about your coloured UPVC windows fading, you can get them professionally spray painted. This will put a protective layer over the UPVC to ensure the plastic underneath stays in the condition it is sprayed. This is also a good solution if windows have already faded and are looking a bit tired. Spray painting also lets you change the colour of your UPVC windows without replacing them. If your windows are weather-tight and in an overall good condition (fading aside) then there is no need to replace them. Spray painting gives windows the appearance of new units for 80% less at just £120 to £150 per window. Do coloured UPVC windows fade after being spray painted? No. The spray paint we use is more resistant to UV than UPVC plastic and fully protects the plastic underneath. To find out more, please visit our UPVC window spray painting page.
