Does expanding foam rot wood?

Water won't sit between the roof and the spray foam insulation because if it did, this would cause rot. It's important the spray foam insulation used in roofs is breathable, as timber needs to breathe and this will ensure no problems such as rot occur.

Can Spray Foam Rot Your Roof?

If you’re concerned about spray foam wood rot, we’re here to put your mind completely at ease. Mass Foam Systems are accredited Icynene® insulation contractors with a passion for making safer, healthier and more cost-effective homes with Icynene® spray foam! We have teams across the UK and offer insulation services nationwide. We’re also experts in Icynene® and we believe it’s a high-performance solution for all your insulation needs. It’s also the least water absorbing of all residential insulation types and is guaranteed to last for the life of your property.

So, will spray foam rot your roof?

Icynene® open cell spray foam will not rot your roof! Unlike sprayed polyurethane foam roofing problems, the Icynene® spray foam used in residential properties has open-cells which means it’s a breathable insulation which will allow air and moisture to pass through it. Water won’t sit between the roof and the spray foam insulation because if it did, this would cause rot. It’s important the spray foam insulation used in roofs is breathable, as timber needs to breathe and this will ensure no problems such as rot occur. If you’ve heard of spray foam rotting your roof, it’s likely to be the result of a spray foam contractor using polyurethane spray foam instead of Icynene®. Polyurethane has closed-cells and therefore has a reduction in breathability which could lead to wood rot in timbers. Polyurethane spray foam insulation is more suited to materials such as metal, where moisture breathability isn’t needed.
