How can you protect sliding glass doors from break-ins?

The same glass doors that allow light to come into your home may also appeal to burglars. If you have clear glass with no window treatment or covers, anyone can take a peek inside your home. Here are a few things you can do today to make your glass patio doors less appealing to burglars.

1. Add curtains or blinds to your patio door.

While this may not directly stop a burglar from entering your home, it may still prove to be a deterrent when used ‌with other methods. Shades make it difficult for a thief to see into your home, so they can’t assess whether you have anything worth taking, or even if you’re home.

2. Upgrade the patio door glass or add a window treatment.

If your patio door has glass panes, it’s a good idea to upgrade the glass to something ‌stronger. This includes window film, tempered glass or shatter-resistant glass. Window film can be tinted or transparent. Window film creates an extra layer of security against breaking glass from both burglars and weather-related instances during hurricane season. The film prevents the glass from completely shattering and falling into your home, keeping the shards in place. Tempered glass or shatter-resistant glass is handy against burglars and can also be helpful during hurricane season. If the glass breaks, it cracks into a spider-web pattern but keeps its shape. This helps reduce injuries from shards of glass that might have otherwise fallen into your home.

3. Add glass break sensors near your patio doors.

If your patio doors have glass panes, glass break sensors can help you detect a burglary as it's happening. If your sensors are hooked up to a home security system, you can get notifications sent to your phone. Glass break sensors add another layer of protection to your home and work well with motion sensors.

4. Install a deadbolt or security bar for extra security.

Many patio boors come equipped with sliding latches that someone can tamper with or break. Deadbolts can help make it more difficult for thieves to pry open your doors. If you have sliding patio doors, they probably operate on tracks when they open or close. These tracks can be vulnerable to thieves who can use a crowbar to leverage the doors off the tracks. Consider adding a security bar inside your home along those tracks to make it more difficult for someone to tamper with the track system from outside.
