For those of you who have ever been bored, or have seen someone get bored, you'll know how much of a problem it can be. But boredom can actually be quite a good thing in certain circumstances, at least, that's what some research suggests. What is a hobby? A hobby is something that one does in their spare time for enjoyment. It is usually a side interest or something that someone has an affinity towards, and they spend their free time on it. Boredom is defined as a lack of interest, motivation and ambition. But this could be down to certain areas of the brain being underactive during boring tasks which leads us to think that the best way to avoid boredom is to stimulate these areas - but if they're not working properly, then getting ourselves interested in something again might be more difficult than we'd think. It is a common experience to be bored. Boredom is one of the most painful negative emotions, since humans naturally prefer pleasure to pain. There are many causes of boredom: lack of purpose, lack of interest, lack of challenge, or too much familiarity. It often happens when we are waiting for something to happen or someone to arrive. This is where hobbies come in handy as they are used to re-ignite an interest and give us that extra push we need to get back into doing things we love again. For example, if you’re feeling bored at work you could use your lunch break to go swimming which should help re-charge your batteries. We’re sure you can relate to a time when you have an enormous workload, or are tired and worn out and not interested in doing anything. It’s just easier to push ahead with the things we have to do, instead of finding inspiration for new ideas and motivation. Trouble is – it’s actually quite common for this lack of interest and motivation to linger for much longer than you expected. It’s even more frustrating when you feel that nothing seems to be able to get you back on track, except for the will power alone. We all fall victim to this kind of thing from time to time. It may be caused by stress, fatigue or even depression. But while it might not seem like it at first, a little boredom could actually be good for you because it gives your brain the chance to take a step back, let go of distractions and reflect on what you really want out of life.
