This often manifests as small brown spots on the surface of the UPVC. The only safe way to make yellowed UPVC white again is to have it professionally spray painted. Everything ages. Some things age beautifully, like the patina on a bronze statue, or the whisky in a barrel. Other things age very poorly indeed, with a perfect example being UPVC window frames and especially if they’re of the white variety.

Yellowing

UPVC exposed to UV light from the sun becomes damaged over time. The UV light breaks down the composition of the UPVC, triggering a chemical reaction which yellows the white plastic at the surface, but not beneath. This yellowing cannot be removed with regular cleaning, because a chemical reaction has taken place in the plastic itself.

Making them white again

Unfortunately, there is no risk-free way to get UPVC window frames white again with the use of chemicals or bleaching. Bleach should never be used to clean or restore UPVC because it triggers another severe chemical reaction which turns white UPVC brown if it is left to dwell. This often manifests as small brown spots on the surface of the UPVC.

Spray painting is a safe remedy

The only safe way to make yellowed UPVC white again is to have it professionally spray painted. This cover up project will change the colour of the UPVC back to brilliant white, with a finish that lasts for at least 10-years if properly applied. The great thing about spray painting though is you can actually change the colour of the UPVC, perhaps from common white to a trendy grey. Spraying UPVC is a risk-free way to get your UPVC windows white again if they have yellowed or dulled over time. Using chemicals to whiten UPVC window frames is dangerous and could do a lot more harm than good. Using hydrogen peroxide is the most common way homeowners try and restore their windows, but the reality is it doesn’t work. It may remove some yellowing temporarily, but if not removed quickly, it will brown the UPVC. It will also dull it, regardless of how careful you are when rubbing it in. Our advice? Choose paint.
