Having a garage to park your vehicles in this winter, especially in cold weather climates, is a great convenience to have. However, the snow and salt brought into your garage on your car can have detrimental effects on your garage’s concrete floor. Advanced Flooring Systems recommends spending a small amount of time cleaning your garage floor throughout the winter as it will save you money and time in the future.

1. Brush Off Your Vehicle

Consider removing snow, ice, and that nasty brown slush from your vehicle before pulling it into the garage. This will reduce the amount of water and contaminates that will be present. Since concrete is a porous surface, water will seep down into the floor and cause damage when the water freezes and expands.

2. Clean With Hot Water And Vinegar

The salt and chemicals that are used to keep winter roadways safe can quickly erode concrete. It is important to be able to remove these contaminates from the surface of the concrete. To do this, mix a solution of 1 gallon of hot water and 1 cup of distilled vinegar. Scrub the floor using a stiff bristled broom or a deck brush. Remove water with a squeegee. NOTE: If your garage is not insulated and/or heated, you may want to save this step for days when the temperature in the garage will remain above 32 degrees until the floor has dried.

3. Get Out The Fans

If your garage is not connected to an HVAC systems or does not have a gas heater, it will take longer for any water on your garage’s floor to evaporate. You can speed this process by simply installing a ceiling fan or bring a household fan out into the garage.

4. Install An Epoxy Garage Floor Coating

Epoxy floor coatings eliminate many of the garage floor related headaches caused by winter weather. An epoxy coating seals the concrete and completely protects it from wear caused by salt, snow, and other environmental factors. A coating also makes your floor much easier to clean as the coating creates a smooth, non-porous surface. A professionally installed coating will also be slip-resistant, even on floors covered in snow or water. Give these tips a try this winter to protect your garage floor.
