5 Ways You Can Protect Kitchen Plywood Cabinets From Water Damage

Kitchen plywood cabinets are exposed to high levels of moisture. There’s simply no way around it. Whether you cook a curry, make soup with boiled vegetables, or simply boil water, exposure to the vapours will take its toll on the outer surface of the cabinets. And let’s not ignore the possibility that when you are in a hurry, you may put wet utensils in the cabinets after just giving them a good shake or two. Over time, these little problems can lead to rapid wear and tear of your cabinets. So, how to prevent that? Here are 5 ways for you to protect expensive cabinets. 1. Laminate the outer surface of the cabinet, irrespective of the type of plywood you use to build it. It will provide an additional layer of protection against moisture. 2. Wipe the cabinets clean with a dry, soft cloth at least once a day. This will prevent moisture from building up on the surface. Not only that, doing so will also remove a thin film of dirt that builds up due to the vapours of oil that cabinets often collect on the outer surfaces. 3. Use waterproof plywood (BWR grade) to build the cabinets. The material already has a good degree of resistance against moisture, and is great for use in a kitchen, where moisture levels are usually high. 4. Cover the inside floor of the cabinet with old newspapers. It is easy and cheap, and can absorb a lot of moisture, protecting the insides. 5. Put a small bowl of soda lime inside cabinets made of plywood. The soda lime will absorb moisture and keep the insides dry. Toss out the used soda lime every month and refill the bowl with fresh lime for best results. With a little protection, plywood cabinets can last for a long time to come. However, also be sure to check waterproof plywood specifications before you buy it to build cabinets. Remember, plywood with the right amount of moisture resistance will last way longer in moisture-laden air than treated, ordinary plywood ever will.
