1. Determine what services your client needs. For example, your client might want to remodel his kitchen, add an addition to his home or finish his basement. Inform the client that you will need additional information before you can provide an estimate. Do not use a flat rate for each service because it is not cost effective. For example, charging a flat rate to remodel a kitchen can prove problematic as every kitchen remodel is different -- like a 70 square foot kitchen versus a 225 square foot kitchen. You could also be agreeing to various different services in a remodel, such as demolition and hauling. 2. Ask for additional details. Find out the size dimensions of the room, if you will be doing the demolition, whether or not you will be picking out the new designs and the costs of materials. For example, if you complete the demolition and order the materials and designs for the client, this adds to your labor fees. Exotic wood cabinets, luxury crown molding and enameled lava stone counter-tops are some of the more expensive materials. 3. Determine the cost all materials, including cabinets, wood, drywall and even screws. Charge clients a fair price for materials, but not necessarily the amount you actually paid for them. For example, if you purchased a box of 100 screws for $2, you can charge 5 cents per screw instead of charging $2 for the whole box. For other materials, such as drywall and wood, charge just above your cost as you do not want your gain on materials to be apparent to the client. If you purchased each wood plank for $1 because you purchased in bulk, charge the standard price a hardwood store would sell each piece of plywood for. For materials such as cabinets and counter-tops that the client specifically requests, charge the client what you paid for those materials. 4. Determine the cost of labor. Corrine Minard of MSN Carpentry says a carpenter must charge for everything touched; this includes everything you move; your trips to and from the client's home; for picking out the designs; demolition; and throwing away materials. To determine the amount of hours the job will take, rely on your knowledge and past experience. For example, how long does it take you to install cabinets? Ask yourself these relevant questions and determine how long the entire project will take. 5. Calculate your labor cost by estimating how many hours the job will take you in total and then multiplying that number of hours by your hourly rate. This is the preferred method because it assures you receive compensation for your work. If you use a flat rate or you choose the jobs with the highest flat rates, you could lose money. After the cost of materials deducts from a preset rate, your portion could be smaller than your hourly fee. When calculating labor, include your hourly rate as well as anyone else working on the job.
