You’ve been on the hunt for a new job for years. You finally found the perfect one in the field you want, with terrific benefits. A quick search on the company tells you that an old boss works there. You really want this job, but you haven’t talked to your old boss in years. Contacting an old boss for a new job can seem awkward, but it does not have to be. Most former employers assume they will be contacted by past employees as a job reference or for future opportunities. There are ways to reach out to your former employer that minimize awkwardness, even if you did not leave on the best terms. Verify the contact information you have for your old boss before reaching out. You wouldn’t want to send an email to the wrong address or call the wrong number and never get a response. Go to the company’s website to verify her email address and phone number or check her professional social networking page. While you are there, it’s a good idea to brush up on what your old boss is up to these days. Once you have the correct contact information, decide if you are more comfortable calling or sending an email. This might depend on the prior relationship you had with him, or if you know he prefers one form of communication over another. When you reach out, keep the tone professional but friendly. Include a warm greeting that lets her know why you are contacting her.

Example:

Hi Joanne,

It’s been a long time! I wanted to reach out to you about a new job at your current company that I’m interested in. I noticed a recent job posting for a senior sales representative with your company and I'd like to chat with you about the opportunity, if possible. You can also make your contact more personal if you feel comfortable doing so.

Example:

Hi Dave,

I saw on LinkedIn that you were promoted to managing the Western territory. Congratulations! I was wondering if we could touch base on a senior sales representative position I heard about at your company. I’m curious to find out more about it.

Reminder of Past Work History

There’s a good chance these days that you’re connected to your old boss on social media and are in touch, even if loosely. If you have not been in touch with your old boss for some time, it’s smart to remind her of how you worked together in the past. Be sure to include the name of the company for which you both worked and your respective positions and dates of employment to jog her memory.

As a reminder, I worked for you when you were the sales manager at ABC Company. I started working at ABC Company in 1999 and was a top salesperson for the Northwest territory from 2000 until 2008. I resigned in late 2008 to accept a promotion with another firm.

Describe your Accomplishments

Describe what you have accomplished and where you've worked since he was your boss. Name the companies you worked for and notable achievements between then and now. If you considered him a mentor or if you have fond memories of working with him, briefly mention what you took away from that experience.

Example:

Currently, I'm managing the sales department at XYZ Enterprises. I’ve also received training in advanced sales techniques. I'm interested in exploring opportunities with your new company because of the wonderful guidance and mentoring I received from you during the time we worked together. It’s always nice to add a personal touch when it makes sense. If you worked with your old boss for a long period of time, she may have shared a lot of stories about her life with you. Acknowledging something you recall from your time working together helps make it more cordial and less formal.

Example:

I hope things are going well on your end, and your children aren’t wearing you out too much! It would be great to catch up!

Ask for a Meeting

Ask for a meeting with your old boss so you can touch base in person. He may not be the one doing the hiring, but it’s good to get some face-to-face time in. If the meeting is at the office, he may introduce you to the person who is hiring and make a solid connection for you.

Example:

Do you have any availability to meet next week? I can meet for coffee anytime Thursday or Friday. Or we can meet at your office if that’s easier.
