How do you store a bike with no space?

If your bookshelf is high enough for your bicycle to fit vertically, you're good to go! Simply remove some shelves to make space for the bike and fit a vertical bike mount to the inside of the bookcase. This will allow you to store your bike inside without giving up any extra space.

There are options out there though! If you’re trying to figure out how to store a bike in a small flat, look no further – here are five innovative bike storage ideas, other than using a bike rack, you can consider. Cycling is a great way to get around, especially if you live in the city. The challenge is that living in the city often also means living in a small apartment with no space to store your bike, or so you might think.

1. Hang it from the ceiling

No floor space? No problem! You can hang your bicycle from the ceiling. Ceiling bike hoists, like this one by Gear Up, allow you to store your bicycle indoors without giving up any space at all. This specific bike hoist can support bikes weighing up to 120 lbs (54 kgs). This is a great flat bike storage solution for small spaces. The only aspect you need to consider is the positioning of the bike hoist to ensure you don’t constantly bump your head against it. If you don’t have an extra high ceiling it’s a good idea to install the hoist close to a wall, where you’re less likely to walk.

2. Put it in your bookshelf

Is your flat so full that you can’t possibly cram in another thing – not even a small bike rack? You don’t have to. Instead you can convert one of your existing bits of furniture into a bike rack, like a bookcase for example. If your bookshelf is high enough for your bicycle to fit vertically, you’re good to go! Simply remove some shelves to make space for the bike and fit a vertical bike mount to the inside of the bookcase. This will allow you to store your bike inside without giving up any extra space. This trick will also work with other large furniture items like cupboards. The only downside is that you might have to clear out some books, but that’s OK because you can use a Kindle instead! Not a fan of DIY? You’ll be happy to hear that there are shelves like these available to buy, like the aptly named Bookbike.

3. Store it under the stairs

When considering how to store a bike in a small flat, if you have a staircase in your home, this might be the perfect solution for you. Instead of letting the space underneath go to waste, rather use it to store your bike. All you need to do to make this work is put up some bike hooks that can be bought at most cycling stores!

4. Mount it to the back of a door

If you don’t have any extra wall space to store your bicycle (and your apartment doesn’t have any stairs either) why not consider hanging your bike on the back of a door? This is a super easy flat bike storage option; all you’ll need to do is buy a bike vertical door mount (that is available on Amazon) and hang it up. If possible, it’s worth looking for a door that you open less often. The door will be more difficult to operate when the bike is attached. Rarely opened cupboard doors are a good option.

5. Get a bike tent

If you absolutely cannot find a spot to store your bike inside, but you have a balcony, you’re in luck. You might not be too keen to store your bike outside as it could get damaged by dust, rust and rain. But this doesn’t have to be the case! Simply get a bike tent, like this one available at World of Camping. This tent will protect your bike against the elements and you won’t have to give up any space in your small apartment at all. There you have it! Five novel suggestions to help you decide how to store a bike in a small flat. Still struggling for space and decided to clear out some stuff?
