A lot of newer homes are being built to be extremely airtight, which is a good thing for energy efficiency but can result in poor ventilation. Proper ventilation is necessary for maintaining good air quality and for removing moisture from the air in your home, while preventing stale and damp air from building up inside your home, and resulting in mold or mildew growth. In the winter, ventilation is important, since you’ll have windows open less often, or not at all, to keep the cold air outside. The air inside your home may be up to 10 times more polluted than the air outdoors. This dirty indoor air is usually a combination of various airborne particulates, including pollen, mold, pet dander and volatile organic compounds found in the home. Proper ventilation is the answer to improving your home’s indoor air quality and, therefore, the health of you and your family. The simplest way to ventilate your home is by opening windows and doors. Even in these cold winter months, opening the windows for a few minutes each day will ensure that the stale air is partially replaced with fresh air. Also be sure to always use exhaust fans in the bathroom, kitchen and laundry room to extract stale air carrying moisture and fumes. Make sure that your system exhausts the air outdoors rather than simply recirculating it through the house. Mechanical ventilation systems are another option for keeping your home well-ventilated. A variety of systems are available, including heat recovery ventilators that not only ventilate but also help to heat or cool the home. Our goal is to help educate our customers in Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey about energy and home comfort issues related to HVAC and plumbing systems.
