What is Golden Brown timber?

How do I maintain Golden Brown timber?

Golden Brown timber requires the re-application of a suitable weatherproof or coloured treatment every 1-2 years to maintain the appearance and performance of the wood. You can purchase Protek’s Golden Brown treatment here.

What is Pressure Treated timber?

Pressure Treated timber is more durable and long lasting. This treatment is done under pressure which forces chemicals into the wood (thus “pressure treated” wood) Wood that has been tanalised or pressure treated will be more resistant to rot, fungus, mould and insects.

How do I maintain Pressure Treated timber?

You can safely leave your timber product outside without any further treatment. Overtime, pressure treated wood will fade from it’s initially green colour to a light brown, then to a silvery grey colour. However, if you wish you can give it an added treatment for extra protection after a couple of years.

Can I paint or stain Pressure Treated timber?

Yes, you can paint pressure treated timber if you would like to add colour to your garden. This will also give the wood an added layer of protection. However, it is best to wait for a few weeks or more as you should be confident that the wood is completely dry. Otherwise, the paint or stain may peel off.

The life cycle of pressure treated timber will depend on multiple variables including the end use and location of the timber. For example, a shed which is located on a very exposed site might not last as long as one in the corner of a sheltered garden. Again, many variables will effect the life cycle of pressure treat timber which is in contact with the ground such as fencing support posts, flower bed retaining and planter boxes. The dimensions of the timber and the soil moisture content will largely effect this. For example, a heavy duty timber sleeper will last longer than a light timber board. If this is located in a part of your garden which is prone to being regularly damp this will also reduce the service of the timber. As a guideline, the service life for 95x95mm (4”x4”) fence support posts is expected to be 10-15 years. However, we have seen wooden posts lasts over 20 years and some fail after 7 years. Some of the more basic shed roof felts may only last for five years. However, at Timbertrove we use a top quality heavy duty felt which should be good for 12-15 years. As metal has a tendency to condensate, we will fit the steel roof on top of our standard roof felt, so basically you will be getting a second roof covering. Can I get shelves installed in my shed?

Yes, we can supply and fit shelves and a workbench if you wish for a small additional cost. Our sheds have a very strong wooden frame, making it easy to attach extra shelves any time in the future.

What base do I need for my garden shed? Is it okay to put my shed on the grass or soil?

The vast majority of garden sheds sit on concrete blocks which are placed directly onto grass or soil which works great for the average garden shed. Please note that concrete blocks are included in the price of your shed. The blocks will keep the wood from touching the ground and will allow air to circulate under the shed. This option offers great advantages as it will save you the cost of constructing a concrete base and is more convenient if you need to relocate the shed in a few years’ time.

Do I need a concrete base for my shed?

A concrete base would be ideal, but in reality the vast majority of garden sheds sit on concrete blocks which are placed on grass or soil. In most cases, this will work perfectly. However, if you are purchasing a very large shed or you intend to put a lot of weight into it, then you should consider putting it on a concrete base or at least a hardcore stone base. In doing so, you will prevent the shed from sinking or moving. If it moves or sink on one side or corner, it will cause the shed to twist and may push the door out of line.

A full concrete base is the ideal solution, but for the average garden shed it is not necessary to extend it. We can simply place some blocks on the concrete base while building up blocks on the lower ground to support the shed at an even level. However, if you intend on putting heavy items in the shed then extending the concrete base would be the best option.

What happens if the site for my new shed is not level?

If your site is slightly uneven, we can usually fix this quite easily with some extra packers on top of the blocks. However, if the site is very low on one side we can build it up using additional concrete blocks to ensure that the shed will be level. It’s important to note that these blocks will be visible. In this instance, our customers often decide to hide the blocks at a later stage by either raising their garden or camouflaging them with shrubs or a timber panel. If your garden is very sloped or uneven, it may be necessary to level the area before ordering your shed. If you are unsure or concerned, please send us a photograph of the proposed site and we can advise you on this. When taking the photo, if possible include a fence or a wall in the background to give us an idea of the scale and include the size of the shed you are planning to purchase.

It’s important that your new shed sits level otherwise over time the walls will twist and the door will go out of line.

Yes, we can take your old shed down and dispose of it in the correct environmental manner for an additional cost. As a guideline, it costs €175 to remove the average size garden shed. Please call us for an accurate quote. It’s important to note that we will only take away the bare shed and cannot dispose of any contents in addition. The shed must be completely empty before we arrive. If you would like to clear away any other unwanted items it may be useful to consider hiring a skip and disposing of everything at once, including your old shed.
