12×20 Sheds – Limitless Storage Space & More

Space abounds in 12×20 sheds. With 240 sq. ft. the things you can do are virtually limitless. Large item storage, recreation, active use and more. Long items that typically don’t fit a lot of shed will fit in this one. For example, canoes, Kayaks, long ladders, etc. If you wanted to start a small business right in your backyard, you could do it with a shed of this size. If you wanted to collect and re-build classic motorcycles, this shed would be a great choice. If you wanted to build custom surfboards or sailboats, this is a great size for an application like that. You could set up several large machine tools like a table saw, band saw or drill press to make a shed of this size a highly functional workshop.

12×20 Shed Backyard Space Requirements

Clearly, 12×20 wood sheds are best for large properties. When you consider the size of the shed, plus an additional 3 feet to all sides for ease of movement the footprint is substantial. But if you have a large yard, it’s not an issue. Some things to consider with a shed of this length is where to place it in your yard and lighting. For placement, the back of a property is typically a good location as that provides ease of access to the door, and this location is less disruptive to the overall property flow. For lighting, a shed of this length can get somewhat dark towards the back. You may want to add windows or skylights for ease of locating stored items or for active work within the space. Check out our shed buyers guide to learn more on how to prepare your yard for a 12 by 20 shed.

Should you put gravel under a shed?

A gravel shed foundation acts like a basin that collects rain water under your shed. This allows the water to soak into the ground instead of running off and causing other possible issues. If you live in an urban area, your township may require you to put in a deeper stone base so that it can hold more water.

12″ Wider All Around

One important question many folks have when planning for their new shed or storage building is: “How wide should my shed foundation be?” Thankfully, it’s one question with a pretty simple answer. Your gravel shed foundation should be 12″ wider than your shed, all the way around the building. That means if your shed measures 8’x12′, your foundation should measure 10’x14′. There are good reasons for this which we’ll explain below. In cases where your shed has an extra large overhang, you may want to make your foundation big enough so that the water that runs off the roof runs onto the stone pad. Of course, you always have the option to add a gutter and downspout to control the runoff.
