Price Factors in the Cost to Drywall a Garage

Some of these cost factors relate to materials; others are installation labor cost factors.
Drywall Types: In a detached garage, most drywall is 1/2″ or 5/8”. There is little cost difference between the two. But there are a range of drywall types and costs that could be used in an attached garage. These include moisture-resistant drywall in very humid areas and fire-resistant drywall on walls adjoining living space. In some cases, noise-resistant drywall might be preferred when the walls adjoining the garage are bedrooms or other noise-sensitive areas. If you’ve got a shop in your garage and use power tools there, this is a good consideration.
Single or Double Drywall: Code in some areas require fire-resistant drywall on walls that adjoin the house. In other cities and counties, using two layers of drywall on those walls is sufficient. This is a cheap upgrade, since the first layer of drywall doesn’t need finishing. Total cost for the first layer – material and installation – is less than $1.00 per square foot.

Wall Height: It’s not a major factor, but there are slight cost differences between drywalling an 8-foot ceiling vs. installing drywall on a ceiling up to 12 feet.
Ceiling Drywall: The garage drywall cost estimates in this guide include installing on the drywall. But some homeowners skip drywalling the ceiling. Another option is to lay OSB or plywood over the ceiling joists, which gives you storage space in the “attic” of the garage, and then painting the joists and underside of the OSB/plywood sheets.
Finish: Putting a textured finish on the walls or ceiling costs less than finishing the drywall with a smooth texture. Why? A textured finish is sprayed directly onto the drywall. The work goes fast and takes one application. A smooth texture takes three coast of drywall compound, or “mud,” with sanding required after each coat dries. A textured finish takes less than a day. A smooth finish takes up to 3 days.
Insulation too: The average cost to insulate and drywall garage areas will be on the high end of these tables – or will possibly cost more. The cost of fiberglass batt insulation is 35 to 50 cents ($0.35-$0.50) for the material and another 40 to 90 cents ($0.40-$0.90) for installation, so a total of $0.75 to $1.40 per square foot.
Garage Shape: A simple 4-corner garage without windows is the easiest to drywall because it takes the least amount of cutting and piecing. When there are additional corners, window, ceiling cutouts for accessing space above the garage, etc., cost rises a little bit.
Who Does the Work: In any drywall job, labor costs are higher than material costs. If you have drywall skills or want to gain them, DIY will save you at least 50% of the total cost. However, if your skills are so-so or you don’t have skills, it makes sense to hire a pro. You’ll appreciate the appearance, especially if you spend a lot of time in the garage working on this-and-that projects.

The cost of drywall removal isn’t included in the cost tables in this post. If you’re replacing drywall and need to remove/dispose of the old material, consider DIY. It’s messy work, but fairly easy.
If you have a place to store the removed drywall where it won’t get wet, you can gradually dispose of it in your weekly garbage pickup. Otherwise, renting a small dumpster or paying the drywall contractor for the work makes the most sense.
How Much Drywall Do I Need for a Garage?

The short answer is that you should multiply the height and width of all wall areas, add up the totals and add another 5% to 10% to cover trim and waste.
Consider a detached 22’x30’ 2.5-car garage with 10-foot ceilings:
2 walls 22’x10’ = 220 + 220 or 440 total square foot
1 wall 30’x10’ = 300 square foot
1 wall 30’x10’ – a 20’x8’ garage door = 140 square foot
1 ceiling 22’x30’ = 660 square foot
Five 4’x8’ sheets or 160 square feet of drywall to cover trimming and waste
Total: 440 + 300 + 140 + 660 + 160 = 1,700 square feet of drywall.
