When measuring for a door, you should ideally leave at least 2 inches but maybe more like 2 1/2 or 3 inches. If you're using a door rough out, you should have a minimum of 3 inches. Installing a door the right way is not as simple as it might sound. The space between the door and wall must be precisely calculated; otherwise, the door will not open and close as it should. To create a rough opening, you have to measure the height and width of the door, the space between the door and the wall, and the minimum distance from the corners to the door. When creating a door rough out, the minimum distance from the corner to the door is 3 inches on the rough framed walls. Keep in mind that you are also accounting for drywall, so 4 inches is probably best. You should also allow 4 inches of room for perpendicular walls to allow room for the door jamb, stud and a jack. If you are at all uncertain about how to proceed with the installation, it is advisable to seek help from a professional. EZ-Hang Door explains that getting the size of the rough opening correct is key to a perfect door installation. Not all door openings are completely square and plumb, so there needs to be extra room to adjust the door and the frame. Aside from that, there needs to be space for the wall to contract and expand throughout the years as the seasons change. Also, not all doors are the same size; they vary by manufacturer. According to US Door & More , the standard exterior door size measures 80 x 36 inches, but some have different heights and widths. In addition, the standard thickness for doors is 1 3/4 inches. The majority of interior and exterior doors have about the same rough opening widths, though this is not always true. It is always a good idea to find the manufacturer’s recommended rough opening measurements. The most common interior door height you will find is 80 inches, but some are 78 inches. Widths range from 24 to 30 inches. You can find many rough opening size charts online that can help you estimate rough openings for interior doors. Once you have the door that is ready to be installed, add 2 inches to its actual width and 2 1/2 inches to its height. You can measure the door yourself, but you may also wish to verify these measurements with the manufacturer’s website or the product packaging. Family Handyman describes the steps for installing a new door frame. Many DIYers make their own door frames, which requires more work than using a pre-hung door. Either way, the new frame has to be set in the opening and then adjusted with shims. Then, you need to check to see if the new door fits into the frame and make any needed adjustments. This Old House recommends using interior door frame kits or pre-hung doors because they are easier and quicker to install. These come with their own door, hardware, and frame, but you still need to adjust the jamb and door.
