Read More »Floor joist bracing is often necessary in older homes where the existing joists may have worn out over time. Although you may be intimidated to go into your floors or ceilings to provide additional support, installing bracing support for your floor joints is a straightforward job if you have some woodworking skills.
According to experts at Home Tips , most floors are constructed on top of a framework built from wood that provides strength as well as space for insulation, ventilation and electrical lines. This framework consists of floor studs (or joists) that support the sub flooring. Joists are parallel pieces of wood spaced at regular intervals that normally measure 12, 16 or 24 inches from center to center. They’re usually made of standard 2-inch planks, which come in different lengths depending on the size of the room. Writers at Floor Techie suggest that you look at your floor joists before tackling the project, so you can determine the best way to brace them. Some homeowners use simple floor joist blocking that consists of supports installed between two parallel joists, which are then nailed into place, either staggered or in a straight line. Other homeowners look at floor joist bridging (or cross-bracing), which is where joists are connected in an X pattern for additional support. Look at building codes in your area to determine which dimensions are necessary and the type of bracing that might be required in your home.
