Pros and Cons of Climate Control in Your Shed

Homeowners are buying sheds for many different reasons. Some want them for added storage space; others want a place to do projects. As the quality of sheds has improved, some homeowners are even using them as small rooms for entertaining, as a get-away from the activities in the house or even as an extra sleeping space. Whatever the reason, you may find you need some shed climate control if you’re going to spend any time in that shed. So here are some things to think about.

What’s Your Plan?

If you’re using the shed for more than storage, you may need to finish the walls, floor and ceiling, adding insulation and weatherstripping, so that when you add heating or cooling, it’s not just oozing out the cracks into the Indiana air. If you are using it as a storage shed, you may not need anything more than a portable fan and space heater for the limited time you’re in the shed. Be mindful of what you’re going to store, however. Without climate control, your items could get damaged by heat and humidity.

Types of A/C and Heating

Here are some HVAC options for your shed.

The cheapest air conditioning solution is a window unit. They are inexpensive and will do the job in such a small space. The only problem is they are noisy and really obtrusive. Through-the-wall A/C and heating combo. These units can be installed in a window or through a wall. They are relatively inexpensive and you can find quiet ones. Portable air conditioner. These A/Cs can cool the shed effectively, but need to be vented so they let out exhaust heat. Ductless mini-split air conditioner. These units can heat and cool, and do so by moving refrigerant from the interior to the exterior between an indoor air handler and an outdoor compressor. They can be expensive, but they are quiet and efficient and are ideal for a small space. They require no ductwork, as the name implies.
