Is it better to use wood or plastic?

Contrary to popular belief, wood products are actually much more durable than plastic. Plastic can and does warp, break, melt, and chip over time, whereas wood products tend to hold their value, stay intact, and look classy forever.

5 Reasons Why Wood Products are Better Than Plastic

Did you know you could actually be doing more harm than good for your own health and the environment by purchasing plastic?

Consider the following reasons to switch from using plastic items in your everyday life, to using wood products.

#1: WOOD PRODUCTS ARE SUPER DURABLE

Contrary to popular belief, wood products are actually much more durable than plastic. Plastic can and does warp, break, melt, and chip over time, whereas wood products tend to hold their value, stay intact, and look classy forever. While a plastic board can quickly end up scratched and damaged, a wooden board is more resilient as the knife slices between the fibers of the wood and doesn't leave marks. When marks or scratches do occur, these can be easily removed with a refinisher, leaving your board good as new. Wood is a durable material for both homes and commercial buildings. When properly looked after it can last hundreds of years. Modern wood preservatives enhance natural durability.

#2: WOOD PRODUCTS ARE FAR MORE ECOLOGICAL THAN PLASTIC

It's pretty much common sense when you think about the fact that wood products are far more ecological than plastic and for good reason. Wood and the production of wood products leaves far less carbon imprint. Trees, when growing and alive, absorb carbon dioxide from the air, leaving behind clean filtered air, with more oxygen, for all of us to enjoy. On the other hand, plastic manufacturing puts carbon into the air, along with a myriad of other chemical compounds that are harmful to the ozone, human health, and wildlife. Because plastics and their ingredients are pervading our oceans and waterways, invading the bodies of humans and wildlife, and filling landfills (with new and once recycled plastic) the Ecology Center recommends eliminating plastics from your life, as much as possible.

# 3: WOOD PRODUCTS DO NOT CONTAIN BPA

BPA, or Bisphenol A, is a synthetic compound which is used in the manufacturing of plastic products to bind the plastic together. BPA is present all around us in the environment and in manufactured products. Research has linked exposure to fertility problems, male impotence, heart disease and other conditions. Did you know that the majority of plastic products, unless specified on the product itself, contain BPA? What's worse is that this chemical has been found to be hazardous to human health - and most all plastic products contain BPA. Imagine a product sitting across the room from you putting off harmful chemicals into the air. (Clocks, wall art, jewelry, kitchen accessories). Now, imagine yourself using a plastic phone case on your phone, in which you hold against your skin - and your head, no less - each and every single day. Wood phone cases don't do that.

If you're like us, you love uniqueness. That's what you'll find with wood products. You see, no two pieces of wood are exactly the same, because no tree that they come from is the same - so each individual wood item is exactly that - individual and unique. Unlike plastic, which warps, chips, wears away, cracks, and even melts, wood products are incredible in the way that, as time wears on, your wood items gain character. Those little nicks, dents, and bangs against your products will only add character and life. As an added bonus, oils from your skin from touching your wood items will give way for the beauty of the wood to shine through, displaying the wood grain within. Solid wood retains its appearance, achieving a lovely patina as it ages. Any damage that occurs can be easily repaired and the furniture restored to its original appearance. Environmentally over time, solid wood furniture is much more eco-friendly.

BONUS! #6: THE AESTHETIC IS UNMATCHABLE

If you were to place two products of a similar nature next to one another, one being plastic, and the other wood, which one would you believe to be more attractive? The wooden product, of course. There's just something incredibly classy about wood that plastic can't touch. That's yet another reason why wood products supersede the competition - because, truth be told, there really is no competition. Wood is unique, and wood products speak for themselves. Wood holds a timeless beauty that is unmatched by any other.
