What's it cost to build a shed?

One of the most asked questions I get is how much it costs to build a shed. The best way I can answer that question is to refer visitors to my materials cost sheet page on my site. There you can download any of the materials lists I have for all of my shed plans to determine the exact building cost. I also have a materials spreadsheet you can download. Each item used for building your shed is linked to Lowe's or shed windows and more.com where you can see how much that item costs. If you are interested in getting this spreadsheet please contact me and let me know.

Can you put a shed on cinder blocks?

Any time you build a shed, it needs some sort of foundation to act as a buffer between the shed and the ground. An on-grade shed foundation made out of cinder blocks is a quick and easy foundation to construct. Made of concrete masonry units, or CMUs, this type of foundation usually takes very little work to set up.

While it’s not necessary, a shallow layer of crushed gravel scattered on the ground where you plan to set the shed provides better drainage during rainy weather, says Fine Homebuilding. The gravel also serves as a base for the CMUs. To install the cinder blocks, you need to set them on the ground, spacing the blocks so they align with the shed’s corners, walls and center support locations. Follow the shed manufacturer’s recommendations or the recommendation on the shed’s blueprint for spacing. You might need to do some digging in order to level the CMUs. In some instances, you might need to stack blocks to get them all level. Once you get the blocks in position, set a long, straight piece of lumber on top of them. Set a carpenter’s level on top of the board to check for levelness. Add or remove soil under blocks that are not level and reset them.
