The United State’s loneliness epidemic has been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic but the VentSpace app aims to offer some relief with a free, private platform for connecting and getting support. Designed by a team in Austin, Texas, VentSpace was built on the premise that everyone has something they need to get off their chest, but not everyone has someone to safely talk to. While other social apps thrive on users identifying and posting images of themselves, VentSpace is anonymous. This allows users to be unfiltered and release worries about offending others or needing to be politically correct. VentSpace is a free, anonymous social app where users can “vent” their thoughts and feelings without repercussions. Mental health has become an increasingly important topic over recent months as economic, racial, and health issues rise to the surface. Traditional mental health services may be cost-prohibitive or stigmatized. VentSpace doesn’t replace therapy, but gives users a place to start. The instant, anonymous nature of the platform creates a positive safe zone for users to express themselves in transparency without fear of judgment and get support from other users. Company founder Daniel Griggs said he hopes the app will help users feel less lonely during this challenging time. “We designed this app so that people could have a judgement-free zone to share their deepest thoughts without holding back their true feelings or needing to be ‘politically correct,” he said. “Unlike Facebook this platform has no profiles. Unlike Instagram this platform is free from fame and fake perceptions. It’s the social safe place with No Filters, No Judgements. No Names.” The VentSpace app is straightforward: users sign up for an anonymous account, then share their “vent” under topic categories such as “depression,” “loneliness,” or “PTSD.” Users can read stories from others and “relate” to or “follow” individual posts. VentSpace launched in August, after a soft launch of the Beta version in June. Hundreds of users have already registered and are sharing their stories and feelings — on topics ranging from cancer diagnoses to cheating on a partner to piercings gone wrong.
