It’s a common question we get: “I’ve been told that I need to caulk my new wooden shed? Is it really necessary?”

Our answer to you is, yes. Here’s why.

Reasons to Caulk a Wooden Shed

Caulking your new wooden shed will add many years of life to your shed. Caulking is necessary for the preservation of your wooden storage buildings.

Caulking a shed will keep your storage items dry.

Caulking saves money:

Not only does it add years of life to your shed, but to the items you store in your shed, like your expensive tools! You’ve invested a lot of money into buying tools and backyard accessories. Investing in a caulk job will keep your items dry and in good shape.

A little caulk on your new wooden shed actually has earning potential!

Caulking your shed could possibly add value to your home. Yep. That’s right. It’s proven that various amenities will add to the appeal of your home during the buying process. A shed is one of those amenities.

Tips on Caulking:

Put caulk anywhere the siding meets.

Along the trim.

Along the bottom edge of the siding where the edge overlaps the doors.

Where the roof meets the siding.

Corners.

Around the windows.

Around air vents.

Application Tips:

For latex-based caulk, keep a rag handy to wipe up drips immediately. For silicone-based caulk, outline your edges with tape to keep your seams straight. Cut the tube smaller than you think necessary, and test it first. It’s easier to make a bigger hole. But impossible to go smaller. Don’t try to make your caulk job perfect. Water can find it’s way into the best of seal jobs. You don’t want it to be impossible to find it’s way back out. Leave one or two small holes.

Attractiveness Tip:

Use paintable/stainable caulk and paint your shed after caulk application.

Where to Buy Caulk Tip:

Caulk can be purchased at any hardware store. Large chain stores like Home Depot, Lowes and Menards carry caulk. But of course, you should also be able to find it in a local hardware store as well.

It’s Time to Get Caulking!

Remember, caulk is not expensive and it’s an easy job to perform to keep your wooden shed and your tools in good shape. So get caulkin’!
