Read More »Oriented Strand Board or OSB is a great replacement for plywood. OSB is thicker and thus stronger than plywood. You can use it for flooring, roof decking, sheathing in walls or even making furniture. OSB is made by mixing resin with strands of young wood. This makes the board hard. The manufacturers waterproof the board before selling. However, you may still need to waterproof it before making your furniture or other things to provide additional moisture protection and ensure its durability. This is especially important for outdoor applications of OSB. Here we will discuss how to make OSB waterproof.

What Does “Crowning a Stud” mean and why is it important? “Crowning” is when you take a piece of lumber and you sight it. “Sighting” lumber is when you pick up the piece of lumber and put your eye on the board and then look from one end to the other to see if it has a curve.
“Crowning” is when you take a piece of lumber and you sight it. “Sighting” lumber is when you pick up the piece of lumber and put your eye on the board and then look from one end to the other to see if it has a curve. A piece of lumber can be bowed, crooked, kinked, cupped, and twisted. At Buck Robertson Contracting we always crown all material installed into the structures we build. Crowning your studs is important because it makes for flatter finished walls. We always crown the studs out, which gives us results like this: The “plumb line” represents what a flat wall looks like. The drywall board goes onto the wall and follows the curve of the wall (concave). A crowned out wall (which is concaved, as shown above) allows the drywallers to place their mud in the center of the wall in order to fill in the space between the plumb line and the drywall board. This consolidates the majority of the mudding to one location. When mudding a wall, you want a flat surface and to cover the joint made by the drywall board.
