You can find your own reusable cloth mesh produce bag here. These are great for this DIY deer repellent and can easily be washed and reused. P.S. I love using these mesh bags when I’m gathering produce. They are so helpful to have on hand and super planet friendly.

How to Make DIY Deer Repellent:

1. Start by removing the Irish Spring soap from the box. Depending on how big of a border you wish to cover, you may want to cut the bar in half.

Ideally, one bar should cover about a 10 x 10 foot space.

2. Drop the soap into the mesh bag and tie the top tightly. 3. If you mesh bag doesn’t have a drawstring for hanging, tie the mouth up tightly with twine. Leave some extra twine for hanging.

Where should I hang my DIY Deer Repellent?

Hang the bags around areas where deer are an issue. You can hang the bag directly from a fence, a hook, or a wooden yard stake. Shepherds hooks can be super helpful when it comes to hanging your deer repellent. You might find that they stay more secure this way. Hang the bags so they are about as tall as the typical deer. You want it to be in the path of their nostrils so they smell it. If you hang the bags too high, they may not catch a whiff. Don’t display the deer repellant any higher than about 4 feet. You want to hang the soap as close to the plants or flowers the deer are most attracted to. Need some ideas? Keep reading. For example if the deer love your chicory or kale plants, you may wish to hang the soap/mesh bag on a hook directly into the garden bed where these plants are. The larger your flower beds, the more bags you may wish to scatter.

How does Irish Spring Repel Deer?

Deer will be turned off by the smell of the soap. As soon as they smell it they may choose to dine elsewhere. Deer have very strong sniffers so they are very aware of what is around them. While it may take them a few visits, they will soon sniff out the soap. The nice thing about this method is it is a gentle way to deter deer. You don’t need to worry about hurting them. You can replace your bar of soap every few weeks to keep the scent strong and fresh. You may also wish to replace it after prolonged rain or extreme weather.
