With all the doom and gloom happening in the world- here’s a bit of good news. Cuprinol is back with their Shed of the Year competition for 2022, so get prepared for some show-stopping designs from the nation’s most talented sheddies. Sheds have kind of had their star moment during the pandemic, with many people using them as a place to congregate with friends and family, build a business or even turn into a makeshift gym. With this in mind, Cuprinol has promised this year’s competition is shaping up to be one of its most fiercely contested yet. Hopeful entrants must submit their creations in one of seven categories to be in the chance to win the prize of £1,000 and £11 worth of Cuprinol products. There will even be a Lockdown category this year, which will recognise all the amazing creations made during those strange months in 2021.

Last year, Danielle Zarb-Cousin walked away with the top prize after winning Cuprinol Shed of the Year 2021. She left judges astounded by her chic, 70s-inspired Crème de Menthe bar inside her shed that she decorated using vintage and charity shop finds. Danielle began the project as a way to cope with her heartbreak after splitting from her fiancé, Love Island’s Jonny Mitchell. Talking about the award, she said: “Winning Shed of the Year felt amazing! The shed became a real focus for me during a turbulent time in my life and during the first lockdown when there wasn't much to do. “It also showed me that I can do anything I put my mind to, so I am really proud of myself, and I'm so pleased the judges thought it was worthy of the winning title. “During lockdown, I think it was really important for us to create spaces in our homes or gardens that gave us the opportunity to escape, unwind and relax and the shed gave me a place to sit and write my blog and to just get away from all the madness going on in the world.

“It has also shown me that I'd like to do more upcycling and bring other old and unloved things back to life, which is probably something I never would have considered doing myself if we hadn't gone into lockdown and if I hadn't completed my shed project.” If you fancy your chances at this year’s awards, then you need to send at least two photos of your show stopping designs along with an explanation of your inspiration and what makes your shed stand out from the rest.

This year’s categories are:

Budget

Cabin/Summerhouse

Pub & Entertainment

Unexpected / Unique

Workshop/Studio

Nature’s Haven

Lockdown

Is a resin or wood shed better?

wood comes down to what qualities you care the most about in your shed. If you are looking for a less expensive and weather-resistant shed, resin is the better option. Resin sheds are weather-resistant against rotting, peeling, rusting, insects, warping, and fading. Resin is also easier to maintain and assemble.

The final decision on what shed to purchase comes down to your personal preference. The differences between resin vs. wood vs. metal can be narrowed down into 4 categories: price, durability, maintenance, and assembly. When it comes to price, wood is the most expensive and least environmentally friendly option, the resin is the second-most expensive and the most environmentally friendly option, and metal is the cheapest but the hardest to transport and assemble. All three materials are durable and will be able to hold anything you store. But you’ll want to remember which options are going to last the longest through the harshest weather elements. Wooden sheds are not necessarily waterproof and are not resistant to fire or rotting. Metal sheds are more durable as they are fire, insect, rot, and weather resistant. They can rust, but they are more durable to the elements vs. wood. Resin is the most durable because it’s weather-resistant to fading, rusting, warping, rotting, insects, and fire. Assembly is the final factor to consider when purchasing a shed. Some wooden sheds are already built and just require you to install them. However, most wooden sheds are difficult to build and require a lot of work and patience. Metal sheds are also difficult to install and once they are built, it’s very difficult to transport a metal shed. Resin is the easiest to build and easy to move to a new location because of its lightweight material.
