Yes, there are different grades of steel wood. Your softer grades are easy for mice to chew through so won’t be as effective. The medium grade steel wool pads are much harder to chew through, however soft enough that they can be molded into the space you wish to fill. Directions:

1. Take several pieces of medium grade steel wood pads. You can find these at your local grocery store and even dollar store. Opt for steel wool pads that are plain steel wool and do not have added cleansers as some do. 2. Gently pull the fibers of the pad apart to loosen them up. You may want to wear gloves to protect your fingers, as tiny splinters and slivers can result. 3. Identify the areas that seem to attract mice. Look for small entrances and holes around the house. These will often be found on the outside walls of the house. Look around the foundation of the house, around windows, in ceilings, and other areas that seem to be an issue. For us, we have small cracks in the concrete outside of our garage. It turns out that mice were slipping through this crack to enter the garage.

Some steel wool stuffed into this space made all the difference.

4. Take the steel wool and press it into the small space. Pack it in tightly. 5. Once you have packed the steel wool into the space tightly, let it go to work for you!
