Did you know that dogs are the second best burglar deterrent after CCTV? With over 250,000 residential break-ins a year in the UK alone, ensuring your property is safe is of the utmost importance. A previous HouseBeautiful.com/uk poll revealed that 69 per cent of our readers worry about the security in their home (even more so when they are away). Only 31 per cent feel they have enough security measures in place. Looking for additional ways to add security to your home? From hidden cameras to double lock systems, there are plenty of ways you can prevent your home from break-ins, including having a recording of a dog barking, according to ex-burglars. Now, the experts at Webbox have put forward the best guard dogs to consider adopting and welcoming into your family and home – they are also great at putting off thieves from entering your property, with the Great Dane and Bullmastiff listed among some of the top guard dogs.

1.Akita

Intelligent, alert and courageous, the Akita breed is an excellent guard dog. However, their possessive tendencies means they are best suited in a household with older children. They are also naturally wary of strangers, so are brilliant to have taking good care of your home.

2.Bullmastiff

Bullmastiffs make brilliant family guardians. Their large size means they need plenty of room to run around, so they are unsuitable for smaller garden-less homes and flats. These dogs are fearless in the face of danger and will protect your home at all times. With high levels of energy, Dober Pinschers require lots of exercise to keep them active. But with these dogs around, you can be sure your house will stay as safe as can be.

4.German Shepherd

German Shepherds are incredibly loyal, courageous and obedient dogs. Not only do they make wonderful companions (and are greatly loved by children), they make brilliant guard dogs.

5.Great Dane

Loyal and trustworthy, Great Danes are the perfect breeds if you're looking for a dog with plenty of energy. It's good to know that they don't like to be left alone for long periods of time, so be sure to remember this before adoption.
