What happens if you have diarrhea in a composting toilet?

Because Diarrhea typically has a little more liquid in it than normal 'poop' you may find you might need to run the exhaust fan a little more than you would normally to help evaporate the additional liquid. Other than that, your composting toilet should function as normal, without any issues.

Composting Toilets and Diarrhea

13 November 2017

The Green Apple Splatters, The Hershey Squirts, Bubble Guts, Code Brown, The Runs, Montezuma's Revenge, Mudd Butt, Organic Brown Lava, The Trots and my personal favourite – The Arsequake. No matter what you call it, we’ve all had it at one time or another and we’ve all had to deal with the after-effects (which are never pretty). Now if you have a flush toilet in your home, you press the button and all evidence of your regrettable 3 am lamb kebab or dodgy-looking food wagon seafood pie is flushed away. With a composting toilet, you have to deal with things a little differently and we’re here to let you know how.

What to do if you have diarrhea on a composting toilet

Now you’re probably thinking to yourself (other than “I’m never eating three-day-old steak again”) “Can my composting toilet handle diarrhea?” Well, the answer to that question is yes – a composting toilet can certainly handle diarrhea. Because Diarrhea typically has a little more liquid in it than normal ‘poop’ you may find you might need to run the exhaust fan a little more than you would normally to help evaporate the additional liquid. Other than that, your composting toilet should function as normal, without any issues.

How to clean a composting toilet if you diarrhea

This is a pretty straight forward process and you may want to go check out our article How to clean a composting toilet for more info but the process is very easy. Simply swish some of our Nature Flush Enzymes around the bowel and scrub with a toilet brush. You may wish to spray some water around the bowl or pedestal afterwards or simply wet some paper towel and wipe down. As you can see having a composting toilet at home when one or multiple family members have diarrhea is not really an issue, you just need to approach cleaning the after-effects slightly differently than with a flush toilet. If you have other cleaning hints or tips, we’d love to hear from you so we can share them with our customers. Please email us on This email address is being protected from spambots. What is a macerating toilet system?

Macerating toilets use a grinding or blending mechanism to reduce human waste to a slurry, which can then be moved by pumping. This is useful when, for example, water pressure is low or one wishes to install a toilet below the sewer drain pipe.

Maceration, in sewage treatment, is the use of a machine that reduces solids to small pieces in order to deal with rags and other solid waste. Macerating toilets use a grinding or blending mechanism to reduce human waste to a slurry, which can then be moved by pumping. This is useful when, for example, water pressure is low or one wishes to install a toilet below the sewer drain pipe. Maceration can be achieved by using a chopper pump in the sewage lift station or at the wastewater treatment plant.[1]

In Antarctica [ edit ]

At Antarctic research stations with an average summer population of more than 30 people, maceration is the minimum treatment level required before sewage can be disposed of in the sea. This procedure is outlined in the Madrid Protocol, an international treaty outlining environmental practices to be followed in Antarctica. Research stations that do not meet this population threshold are allowed to dump untreated, unmacerated sewage directly into the sea.[1] The treaty also allows ships carrying more than ten people to discharge macerated wastewater (including sewage and food waste) directly into the sea, provided that the vessel is more than 12 nautical miles from shore.[1]: 280

Other large-scale macerative processes [ edit ]

In food processing plants, maceration refers to the use of a chopper pump to create a "blended" slurry of food waste and other organic byproducts. The macerated substance, which can be described as a protein-rich slurry, is often used for animal feed, fertilizer, and for co-digestion feedstock in biogas plants.
