What are flush hinges?

Flush hinges are usually hinges concealed within the inside of furniture or cabinets with opening doors. In accordance with its name, flush hinges can only be used on flush surfaces.

Where can flush hinges be used?

Flush hinges are considered the most versatile hinge because they can be used for almost any furniture or cabinet hardware project. Flush hinges are best used for anything from boxes to doors, essentially, anything with a flush or flat surface. Flush hinges come in a range of different looks and sizes. Explore SCF’s range of flush hinges, including finial flush hinges.

Fitting flush hinges

As flush hinges do not require you to cut a recess, they are often most ideal for light weight doors and small cabinets and make the installation process much simpler. The first stage is selecting the appropriate hinge, considering the required weight of support, size, and style. Finial hinges often offer a more decorative finish. Next you will need to have the required tools for installation. Most commonly this will include a drill, screws, pencil and set-square. Then with care, hold the hinge against the required surface ensuring it is flat and parallel with the edge of the surface, to ensure this is done accurately use a set square. Taking a pencil, mark through the holes of the flush hinge as a guide for drilling. Once you are happy with the positioning of your fastening holes take an appropriate size drill bit and drill a guide hole in which your screw will follow. Reapply the hinge in line with the guidance holes and fasten securely using screws the hinge to the desired surface. Once one side of the hinge is fastened you must simply repeat the process to the adjoining surface ensuring once again your measurements upon fitting the hinge is accurate to allow for smooth opening and closing action. If the hinges have not been applied flush to the surfaces then the mechanism will not work efficiently, which is why we always recommend rigorous planning and measurement during any fittings. The installation of your flush hinge should be completed and is a suitable choice for cabinet hardware.

Other hinge options

Flush hinges are often considered a more entry level choice of hinge, because of their easy to fix and install nature, but this isn’t to say they aren’t a reliable choice, it is completely dependent on the project and required amount of support. It is always advised to consider the weight and support requirements for hinges. Flush hinges are most appropriate for lighter weight jobs. If you require sturdier hinge support there are many other options, such as:

Butt hinges, more suitable for heavier doors and furniture fixings.

Flap hinges, perfect for drop down flaps or cabinet door hinges.

Concealed kitchen hinges, where you require no external evidence of hinges this is a more appropriate choice for cabinet hardware. What are common door sizes?

Standard Size for Interior Doors The height for all passage doors must be a minimum of 80 inches and the standard width sizes for interior doors are 24”, 28”, 30”, 32” and 36”. The minimum recommended door width to allow persons with disabilities' to pass through is 36 inches.

If you are looking to replace a door you currently have, measure the existing door from top to bottom. Continue by measuring the door from left to right. You also want to measure the thickness of the door. Most doors have a thickness of 1 ¾ inch. Your door shouldn’t be too far form that measurement. It is also important to measure the width of the door jamb and the height and width of the frame. Be sure not to include the trim in your measurement. Finally, you should add 2 inches to the width measurement of the door and 2 inches to the height for the doorway opening. This is called a rough-in measurement. A rough-in measurement applies whether or not you are using a pre-hung door. For example, a 36 x 80-inch door, would be 38 x 82 inches when you include the 2 inches of your rough-in measurement.
