What is a Lean-to Shed?

Traditionally, a lean-to is a structure in which the rafters “lean” against an existing structure, like a building or wall, for support. A lean to shed consists of a sloping roof and three walls that lean against the wall of another structure. This type of shed provides simple shelter and storage for lawn and garden equipment, sports equipment, grilling supplies, outdoor furniture cushions, miscellaneous tools, and so much more!

Benefits of Wood Lean-to Sheds

When you’re looking for inconspicuous, compact, functional storage, the lean-to style is ideal. Let’s dive headfirst into the benefits of wood lean-to sheds.

Lean-tos Could Save You Money

Typically, wood lean-to sheds don’t require a conventional stud wall across the back because they are designed to be built against an existing wall. Consequently, lean-to sheds require less materials – this often translates to money savings for you!

Lean-to’s Fit in Tight Spaces

The great thing about lean-tos is they can go almost anywhere. You could place a lean-to shed under your 2nd story deck to save space. Use a lean-to shed to make dead space functional. For example, if you have dead space along the side of your house that simply is not usable for any purpose, put a lean-to there, and the space will have much more utilitarian value.

Lean-tos Have Many Uses

Yet another benefit of wood lean-tos is that they can be used in various ways.

You can use them to:

Protect items from outdoor elements, like high winds, moisture, and heat.

Move outdoor items and tools (bicycles, lawnmower, power tools, etc.) out of the garage and into their own dry and safe space.

Store seasonal items

Keeping with the lean-to shed’s aesthetic design, our Modern shed features a sloping roof with top-quality shingles to protect the top of the structure from weather damage. Solid wood framing throughout the structure makes the shed extremely durable and able to resist winds up to 90 mph. However, unlike traditional lean-to sheds, the Modern shed has four walls and stands on its own. It has a fully studded back wall and is constructed as a free-standing building, not intended to lean up against another structure. While the structure is compact and can fit in small spaces and corners, it’s spacious height-wise, with an 8’7? tall side wall and a 6′ back wall. You can fit many items inside this shed, including gardening tools, bicycles and biking supplies, construction materials, and more. In addition, the shelving possibilities are extensive; since the structure is made of wood, you can mount shelves on the shed’s interior to maximize storage space. This type of shed can be used for more than storage – it’d work perfectly as a home studio, art studio, modern pool house, and much more.

And to top it off, you can get it delivered and installed for an affordable price. What more could you ask for?

Wood Lean-to Sheds FAQs

How much can I store in a lean-to shed?

Lean-to sheds come in a wide variety of sizes. In a small lean-to shed, you may be able to store lawn equipment, a bicycle, and a few other items. However, you can store much more in a larger lean-to shed.

What’s the best material for a lean-to shed?

A lean-to shed can easily be built out of metal, plastic, or wood. But, a wood lean-to with a locking door handle will provide much better security than flimsy plastic or metal sheds. Another advantage of a woodshed is that it can be painted to exactly match the color of the siding on your home. Or, if you want it to stand out as an architectural detail, you can always paint it a nice complementary color. With a wooden lean-to shed, you can easily add your own organization systems such as hooks or pegboards to maximize your storage potential.

How are lean-to sheds installed?

The roof of a lean-to should be mono-pitched. That means it should lean down away from the house in one even flow so that rainwater easily flows down the roof and onto the ground, thereby avoiding standing puddles of water that could damage both the roof and the home siding. Also, the gap between the shed and the home should be sealed properly to avoid water getting between the shed and the building as this could cause damage to the home’s foundation.

Lean-to Shed Quick Facts

An entirely different type of lean-to shed is the one also referred to as a ‘modern shed.’ One very significant difference in this style is that the door is typically located on the highest side of the sloping roof. In addition, this type of shed always has a fully studded back wall and is constructed as a free-standing building, not intended to lean up against another structure. These sheds have the style of the lean-to design but are not technically lean-to sheds in terms of their overall construction. This type of shed can be great for a home studio, art studio, modern pool house and much more. Lean-to sheds, no matter how you ultimately use them, make a great addition to your home because they use space that is, well, just taking up space.
