The saltbox roof is a residential roofing style that became popular during the Colonial era featuring a distinct shape that is still used in residential construction today. Read on as Mascon, Inc. shares an in-depth look at this traditional roofing style.

What Is a Saltbox Roof?

In its simplest form, a saltbox roof is a gable roof with asymmetrical planes, one long and one short side. The short side typically has a low slope, while the long side has a steep slope. On a two-story home, the long side may span the height from the ridge to edge, which can be one long roofing plane or divided into two. A saltbox home is different from a shed roof, as the latter has one roofing plane where the top roof edge meets the top of the rear wall.

Pros and Cons

Saltbox roofs are ideal for areas with moderate to heavy rainfall. As the long side covers most of the structure, it can efficiently route rainwater straight into the gutters. Because of this, proper gutter sizing is important, and should be done by an experienced gutter contractor. Saltbox roofs are also relatively easy to maintain by a professional roofing contractor. The roof shape may result in an unusually tall attic space, but this allows future conversion to a room or loft. There are certain drawbacks that might make saltbox roofs not the ideal roofing choice. The long side of the roof creates a slope indoors. This means, in addition to the aforementioned attic conversion, the homeowner must choose between a low ceiling or an angled ceiling. Can you live in a lean-to?

Equipment for lean‐to living is just the same as for traditional family camping—except that a tent is not needed. However, the tenting family would do well to bring along the canvas shelter.

When people talk about getting back to nature, and living close up to the old girl, they are really talking about life in a lean‐to. This is closer to nature than one can get in a tent, a trailer or a mobile camper. In fact, it is so close that sometimes, when the wind blows and the rain comes from the wrong direction, one lives too intimately with nature. The virtue of a lean‐to is that it is not finished—it is a shelter, usually quite rude, with three walls and a roof and nothing but open space where the fourth wall should be. To us lean‐to enthusiasts, this open space is better than any picture window because it never needs to be cleaned. Also, it is this open side that permits intimate contact with the outdoors and that, of course, is the basic motivation of campers. For one of the major rewards of living outdoors, with a roof over the family's heads, is to greet and be greeted by the morning sun while remaining lazily snug in a sleeping bag. One is not always so greeted, however, and the roof of a good lean‐to should overhang by several feet; with luck, this overhang usually is adequate to keep off the most. inclement weather. A tarpaulin, artfully stretched across the open front, will shield out as much wind and rain as one wishes. The tarp, one of the tent camper's most vital pieces of equipment, is even more essential to the lean‐to devotee.
