On Oct. 11, 1492, while becalmed in the Sargasso Sea, one of the crewmen picked a rose branch from the water. This sign of land renewed their hope for survival and gave the seafarers the courage to continue on to the New World. • George Washington, the first president, was also the first U.S. rose breeder. • The size of a rose depends on the species. Flowers can reach from a couple of inches to 33 inches in diameter. Certain species can reach 23 feet in length. • The largest rose ever bred was by Nikita K. Rulhoksoffski from San Onofre, CA. It was a pink rose measuring approximately 33 inches in diameter. • The buds of the smallest roses are the size of a grain of rice. • The world’s largest rosebush is a white Lady Banksia located in Tombstone, AZ. Its original root came from Scotland in 1885. From a single trunk, which is nearly six feet in diameter, it spreads over an arbor that covers over 8,000 square feet, enough to shelter a crowd of 150 people. • The largest private rose garden in the world is in Cavriglia, Italy, and holds over 7,500 different varieties of roses. • The first rose to leave the earth was as miniature rose called “Overnight Scentsation” that had been cultivated by researcher Braja Mookherjee for experiments in space. The rose needed to be small to fit inside Astroculture, a plant growth chamber measuring 17 x 9 x 21 inches, developed for the middeck of the space shuttle to provide plants with the appropriate temperature, humidity, light, and nutrients during spaceflight. The purpose was to measure how low gravity would influence the rose’s smell. • Over 900 acres of greenhouse roses are harvested in the United States every year; 60 percent of them are grown in California. • More than 54 percent of the land in Ecuador is filled with roses and over 80 percent of land in Zambia is used for rose cultivation.

Each one cross-pollinates thousands of roses every year in the hope of finding that “perfect” one. The number of possible genetic combinations for new roses is mind boggling, but the odds have been placed at about 100,000 to 1 against any specific cross-fertilization producing an outstanding new rose. • “Juliet” is the most expensive rose. Introduced to the world in 2006 by rose breeder David Austin, the Juliet rose took 15 years and about $5 million to breed. The rose is apricot-colored, and is said to have a very light, sensual fragrance. • Suntory Flowers Limited in Tokyo introduced the first blue rose, named “Applause,” in 2009. The rose contains nearly 100 percent blue pigment in its petals. In 2011, Suntory began selling its blue roses in North America. • Truly black roses do not exist, although the Turkish Halfeti rose, also known as “The Black Rose of Turkey,” is an extremely rare breed that appears pitch-black to the eye, but in fact is a dark reddish-crimson color. • While the rose may bear no fruit, the rose hips (the part left on the plant after a rose is done blooming) contain more vitamin C than almost any other fruit or vegetable. • At first, rose oil was added to medicines to mask bitter tastes — it was only afterward that the medicinal virtue of rose oil itself was discovered. • Roses are prevalent in literature and songs. There are over 4,000 songs dedicated to roses.
