What is an oversized garage?

An oversized garage does not have a set definition. It usually consists of a additional space to the side or to the rear, that is smaller than what you could fit an additional car in to.

I am looking at houses for sale in The Woodlands and zoned to McCullough middle school. Many have "oversized garage" but dimensions are not given as to how much bigger the garage is compared to a typical 2-car garage.

White Gold #1 Awarded – Best Answer #1 Awarded – Best Answer Mark McNitt About 6 years ago Hello Shelly. We get this question a lot. A typical 2 car garage (attached or detached) is about 22' to 24' deep. Width can very but bet on a minimum 10' for each car station. Where the "over sized" part comes in is in regards to an extension of that 22' to 24' dimension. Some builders will add a 5' or 10' extension to the garage on the back side. Maybe a 3' side area on a detached garage where the walk in door is located. Just a little extra area that the Realtor wanted to identify when mentioning "over sized". Also, a tandem garage is typically a garage where there is space for 2 cars end to end. We see this in many 3 car garages attached to the home. Can you live in a large shed?

Generally speaking, living in a shed is not allowed. This is because your standard shed is classed as a 10a building making it non-habitable. Sheds, carports, private garages and similar structures fall under this category. If you want to live in a shed, it must meet the criteria of a Class 1a building.

Question: Am I allowed to live in a shed?

Answer: Maybe

There are a number of reasons why you might be considering the idea of living in a shed. These include: You’ve bought a block of land and are waiting for your main house to be built. You have a block of land and are looking for a cost-effective housing option. You are looking to expand the living space of your current property to accommodate guests, teenagers or elderly parents. You are looking to build an investment shed to accommodate holidaymakers and supplement your income. Sadly, there are also people living in sheds who were left homeless after the Black Summer Bushfires. Whatever the case may be, a livable shed is a smart solution to a myriad of housing problems. Here’s what you need to know about building and living in a shed home.
