The minimum air gap to afford backflow protection shall be in accordance with Table 603.3.1. The airgap as a means of backflow protection is the primary method of protecting the water supply at the fixture (see Figure 603.3.1a). When the appropriate airgap separation is provided at each fixture between its flood level rim and the water supply outlet, primary protection will have been provided for the building water supply as well as for the public water supply. This section requires all installations utilizing an airgap to be in accordance with Table 603.3.1. Table 603.3.1 establishes the minimum vertical distance above the flood level rim of the fixture to the water supply outlet. In most instances the distance of a fixture faucet, tub spout or pipe opening to the rim of the fixture is being discussed. There are other installations of airgaps such as a drainage system airgap. This type of installation also must adhere to the requirements contained in Table 603.3.1. Table 603.3.1 applies mostly to fixture and fixture fitting manufacturers. The table refers to two types of fixtures – fixtures without sidewalls or ribs (see Figure 603.3.1a) and fixtures with side walls (see Figure 603.3.1b). The fixture manufacturer will use this table to design the fixture with the proper height of the faucet above the rim for the proper airgap. Although most plumbers will properly install the specified and required fixture and faucet and be done with it, Table 603.3.1 does have very important information for them. The minimum airgap required for any installation is contained in the first row of the table. For effective openings not greater than one-half inch, a minimum airgap of one inch is required. Therefore, all airgaps must be at least one inch in vertical distance above the flood level rim. As one goes down the table, the effective opening increases in size and the resulting airgap also increases, culminating in the requirement for any effective opening greater than one inch which requires an airgap of two times the diameter of the opening. These are two of the most important factors for the protection of the water supply and they will be repeated again in the code. As noted above, in determining the proper size of the airgap, the effective opening is used. This must not be confused with the faucet or spout opening. Note 3 at the bottom of Table 603.3.1 defines the “effective opening” as being the “minimum cross-sectional area at the seat of the control valve or supply pipe.” This location is usually at the point in the valve where the two supply lines (hot and cold) intersect with the supply to the faucet spout. The opening or seat to the faucet or valve spout is usually the smallest opening and is thus the effective opening (see A in Figure 603.3.1c). In most faucets and valves this opening (See C in Figure 603.3.1c) is approximately three-eighth inch and the airgap required is one inch.

For example, the boiler blowoff is 2 inches in diameter the airgap above the floor sink receiving the blowoff would be 4 inches.
