Clear Your Clutter First
Even before you move, take a long hard look at everything you own. Each item should fall into just three categories. You either NEED it, USE it or CHERISH it. For example, you need a bed, you use a kettle and you cherish that wonderful ornament that your beloved gave you. If it doesn’t fall into one of these three categories, then don’t even take it with you – you’ll just be filling up your new home with unwanted clutter. This can cause stagnation and blockages in your life.
There has never been a better time to sell or give away all those things you’ve been thinking might come in useful one day. Or perhaps your Aunt gave you a wedding present that you loathe but felt you ought to keep. These items are now yours to do as you wish. Your View of the World
Your front door is very important in Feng Shui terms since it’s the mouth of the property allowing the chi to enter the home, so do make sure your front door looks attractive and sends positive chi around the house. Check to see if the door furniture is shiny and clean? If painted, is the paint in good condition and the right color for you, and is the direction of the property? Does the bell work? Check that the outside light has a bulb in it that works. Finally, make sure you don’t have to fight your way through a path of overgrown plants to actually get to the front door itself.
Identify Yourself
Most homes have a house number or name which is your face to the outside world. Check the position of the house number or name. Make sure they are level or go upwards, not downwards as this can make things difficult. I’ve lost count of the number of clients I’ve visited where I can’t find the house because it’s not marked clearly. or worse still, no name or number at all! So do check that your house number is clearly visible from the road. Should you live in an apartment, then ensure that your name appears clearly on the space usually left beneath the bell. If you expecting guests in the evening, then do remember to put any external light on for them, especially if you’ve steps or stairs to climb.
Remove the ‘Sold’ Signs as Soon as You Can.
Invariably these are placed in the front and can create a poison arrow for you. Ask the estate agent to collect the sign as soon as possible so that it’s not left lying around for weeks on end. You certainly don’t want anyone else’s clutter having spent all that time clearing yours!
Living there for just a few days will throw up anything that is not working smoothly and, in turn, this can affect how smoothly your life runs. So do check that everything works properly. Pay particular attention to all the doors – do they open silently and smoothly? Are any of the windows or door handles broken? Are there any broken or cracked windowpanes? Do all the cupboard doors open and shut properly? Are there any dripping taps? Get these little jobs done as soon as you can. It usually only takes a drop of oil or a screwdriver and will save a lot of hassle later, not to mention the smooth flow of harmonious chi around the home.
Set yourself a priority list for decorating. Don’t try to do everything all at once. It’s much better to pace yourself (and your wallet!) but it will also give you time to get to know the feel of your new property, too. Ideally, each room should be one that incorporates the best Feng Shui color for that room. More importantly, however, is that you absolutely love the new decor and it really lifts you every time you enter the room. If you really need to change something quickly but don’t know exactly what, then paint the walls a neutral color. This gives you time to find exactly what you want without the old decor making you shrink every time you went in there!
