A layer of crushed gravel, with or without plastic or weed barrier cloth, is the best choice for using under a deck. It sheds moisture instead of absorbing it, keeps the area under the deck drier, and won't decay.

Wood chips, sawdust, or mulch under a deck in a dry climate may work, although insects, reptiles, and rodents also enjoy it. In damp or wet climates, mulch may have difficulty drying out, which can lead to mold, mildew, and fungi growth. The moisture can also accelerate wood rot in the deck.

To calculate the amount of crushed stone, multiply the length of the deck by the width, and then multiply by the desired thickness. This calculation provides the cubic footage of gravel. Dividing that total by 27 (the number of cubic feet in a cubic yard) will give you the cubic yardage required. Using 4” (0.33 of a foot) of gravel under a 10-foot by 12-foot deck for example: 10’ x 12’ = 120sqft x 0.33 = 39.6 cubic feet ÷ 27 = 1.467 or 1.5 cubic yards of gravel. The total weight is about 2 tons, so shop around for the best deal.
