A Mini-Ramp is a type of “U” shaped skateboard ramp known as a vert-ramp or half-pipe (half-of-a-pipe ramp). Mini-Ramps are “mini” because they are generally less than six feet tall. Larger half-pipes can stand up eight, twelve, and even sixteen feet tall.
Such massive half-pipes can launch skateboarders very hig h up in the air, and thus usually reserved for professional skateboarders. Mini-ramps, on the other hand, are much less intimidating and demanding with mellower inclines and shallower apexes. Although accessible for the beginner, mini-ramps also provide an infinite amount of possibilities and challenges for the advanced skateboarder. Most Mini-Ramps are built entirely out of wood: with 2x4s compiling the frame, plywood layering the surface, and masonite covering the top. Mini-ramps also feature an in-laid steel rail, known as the coping, at the top of the incline. Mini-Ramps are relatively compact venues to skateboard, ranging as small as 18ft x 8ft. For this, mini-ramps are popular in backyards, garages, and indoor enclosures. Indoor Mini-ramps can be havens for skateboarders forced inside from harsh weather. Conversely, some mini-ramps can span entire acres with a vast array of spines, transitions, and sections connecting multiple ramps. With the recent influx of state spending into community skateparks, mini-ramps have become staples in many wood and concrete public skateparks. With in-laid rails (copings) and gradual inclines, mini-ramps give skateboarders countless opportunities for both lip (coping grinds and stalls) and aerial (airs) maneuvers. See the "Tricks" Page for more information about mini-ramp manuevers.
