What paint will stick to uPVC?

To paint UPVC properly you need to use solvent-based paint that's formulated for hard plastics. You cannot use oil-based paints because they do not bond with UPVC – they merely 'stick' to it and wear off.

To paint UPVC properly you need to use solvent-based paint that’s formulated for hard plastics. You cannot use oil-based paints because they do not bond with UPVC – they merely ‘stick’ to it and wear off. If you are interested in what the best paint brands for UPVC are, we have experience with several that offer a good finish. We’ll cover these below. Please note: We have not been paid to mention these brands nor do we endorse them. Spraying UPVC may not be a reversible process if the paint bonds on a molecular level. Be sure to read the manufacturer specification sheet before use.

Paint for UPVC windows and doors

Technispray Kolorbond Aquatek

Technispray Kolorbond Aquatek is a 2K paint (two-part paint) with a polyurethane/acrylic resin base and pigments. The paint has a separate hardener that needs mixing in, achieving a more durable finish than standard coating systems. Kolorbond Aquatek is specially formulated for hard plastics and exterior and interior use, with a special mention for UPVC and PVC.

Kolorbond Original

Kolorbond Original is specifically formulated for UPVC and PVC and other hard plastics. It bonds with the plastic on a molecular level, so the finish is far more durable than any paint that merely ‘sticks’ to the substrate. It has a 10-year guarantee if applied professionally. We’ve seen this paint applied before and it creates a fine and durable finish. It is best when applied with an air sprayer.

Rust-Oleum CombiColor Multi-Surface

Rust-Oleum CombiColor Multi-Surface is a solvent-based paint that acts as a primer and top coat all-in-one. It’s a single coating system for hard plastics including UPVC, as well as metal, silicone, masonry, wood and non-porous surfaces. Rust-Oleum mention interior and exterior UPVC specifically in their specification sheet, however air-atomised spraying is not recommended.

Bradite One Can

Bradite One Can is another all-in-one coating system for “professionally prepared UPVC” (cleaned and sanded lightly). It dries in 30 minutes and is available in a variety of finishes as standard. It also blocks and locks stains. Bradite One Can is suitable for airless spraying and air spraying. You should thin it with 5-15% water as required and refer to the manufacturer instructions for nozzle size.

Want a professional job?

If you’re interested in having your UPVC windows and UPVC doors painted, you should definitely consider having the job done professionally. It costs less than you think with us (around £150 per window, £230 per door, £440 for a double garage door) and we paint the exterior and interior of your UPVC units, to ensure that inside and out they appear as though they were originally installed in the new colour.

Here are a few more tips when using paint for UPVC windows:

The silicone/acrylic around doors and windows needs replacing after spraying – paint will not stick to the silicone because it flexes. Solvent-based paints can have high VOCs – indoor paints have lower VOCs but we still recommend keeping all windows open. UPVC needs preparing before spraying – UPVC should be cleaned and filled if there are any cracks. It might also need light sanding.
