Many say carpentry is a labour of love thanks to its labour intensity and the attention to detail it requires. But it can also be a good career path, as it’s one of the largest trades within the construction industry.

Skills, education and training

It goes without saying that you should be physically strong and good with your hands before considering a career in carpentry. There are training programmes available. These give a basic understanding of the construction industry, role players, and the impact of the industry on the South African economy.

In South Africa there are various paths you can choose from.

Path 1: Apprenticeship – training at a TVET college with practical training under a qualified artisan and then a trade test afterwards to be certified. Path 2: Learnership – construction carpenter also known as manufacturing products from wood. There are four training levels to be completed before having to do a trade test. Path 3: National certificate, engineering studies. You’ll need to complete N1, N2 and N3 certification and subsequently a trade test.

Path 4: Artisan internship and a trade test

There are also short courses that take up to four weeks and after getting your carpentry certificate, you should be able to read and interpret drawings and prepare the work area, tools, equipment and materials accordingly. Other skills carpenters need include being creative, practical, able to communicate with clients or builders to assess the requirements of a job. They also need basic maths skills to provide quotes, a knowledge and ability to source materials and do quality controls. They may need to manage staff as well, depending on their work environment.

Duties and responsibilities

A carpenter is a skilled craftsperson who works with wood. They make, fix, and install furniture and other wooden objects.

Experienced carpenters can also design items and make custom-designed furniture.

They also work on building sites, hanging doors, making specialised window frames, pergolas, cupboards, wall units, etc.

Work schedule

Working hours vary depending on whether you work for a company or are self-employed. You are likely to work long hours when working on projects and deadlines.

Job outlook

Excellent. The skills of carpenters are in demand for as long as the construction industry is at work.

Salary range

Carpenters in South Africa earn an average base salary of around R141,000 per annum.
